It was another solid week in the Leech Lake area. Water temps have stabilized in the low 70's, and mid to late summer patterns are still in play.

The Walleye bite on Leech Lake still remains best in the 9-11ft or water range, with 12-15 ft being productive as well. Jig and a nightcrawler followed up with a bobber and leech have been most productive. Reaction baits such as a jigging rap, shiver minnow or berkeley finisher have provided a few bites as well when fish are finicky.

For Cass Lake, shallow water in the 7-10ft range has been producing during the morning and evening hours. During the mid day times, try sliding out to 14-20ft on the steeper breaklines to put a few keepers in the boat. There has also been a decent bite in 26-30ft where the breakline meets basin using a bigger size minnow and lindy rig.

Perch action is starting to pick up on both lakes. I haven't had much time to target them but am hearing decent reports using a jig and a fathead in 7-9ft. This bite should continue to improve once we start cooling off in the evenings on both lakes.

Hard to believe its almost September! I still have a few openings, including Tues and Wed of this week, as well as the 7,8 and 9th of next week. Let me know if you would like to get out!

Another great week on Leech and Cass Lake! Walleye fishing is improving daily with water temps dropping back down to the low 70s.

The best walleye bite on each lake was in the shallow water during morning and evening hrs in 6-10ft. Light jigs and nightcrawlers performed better than leeches or reaction baits. Young of the year perch are becoming a bit pesky now so keeping your jig up off bottom is key to avoiding losing your bait and keeping it in the active zone for walleyes. 11-14 ft of water out off the edge of rock reefs on Leech is producing fish as well during the middle of the day.

Cass Lake has been best for numbers of keeper walleyes, as well as a improving bite on Perch. For perch, look to the shoreline underwater points up on the base in 7-10. A simple jig and a fathead minnow or plastic has been working best.

The Musky bite has remained solid as well lately on both lakes. This is the time of year where all fish are eating multiple times of day on multiple food sources, so being patient and timing is key.

Fishing has remained fairly consistent over the past week on Leech, Cass and Winnie. A little bit of a "cool off" has fish changing patterns a bit, but for the most part the mid summer patterns are still in play.

Quality size fish still remains best on Leech. The trick is to find the under 20" size most days. Depths of 11-13 ft are still holding most of the numbers, while shallower depths up to 8ft are producing as well. Each day is different, so being able to use and read your electronics is essential. Crawlers and medium leeches were once again the best live bait of choice.

For Cass and Winnie, start shallow in the morning in 8-10 ft and adjust accordingly throughout the day. Most of these fish are sitting on top of large expansive flats. Steep breaklines begin to produce during the afternoon hrs in 12-18ft as well with a bobber and a leech.

The jumbo perch bite has started on Cass as well, with lots of nice keeper fish coming on the base of shoreline points in 8-10 ft. A simple 1/8 oz jig and a fathead minnow will do the trick.

A combination of trips between Leech and Cass Lake provided some pretty decent results this week.

Fish were still eating a jig and a crawler in 9-12 ft most days on Leech Lake. Bobbers and a leech with a small jig provided the 2nd best results. A few fish came off reaction baits like a jigging rap as well. Once again, moving out to edges of flats in a little bit deeper water were most productive during the afternoon hrs.

A quick break in the warm weather paired with a few days of north wind changed patterns and slowed the bite on Leech, but improved the bite on Cass Lake. Water temps dropped from high 70s to low 70s late in the week. For Cass, fish edges of the steeper breaklines for the most active fish in 14-18ft. Shallow flats fished early in the morning in 9-11ft were productive as well. Perch are starting to show up in numbers as well just on the inside of where Walleyes are hanging on top of the structure.

Another week of steamy weather. Water temps during the afternoon on wednesday touched the highest reading I may have ever seen at 81 degrees. Through all, the bite was pretty dang good for the end of July with multiple days of limiting out as long as you can catch enough of the elusive "unders" to round out a limit.

Best depths and bait this week were 10-12ft using leeches under bobbers, jig and a crawler or jigging rap. Each day was different and sometimes changed hourly. Time of day did not matter so much, it was all about when fish activated and had digested enough to actually eat again. Patience was once again key. Best colors were once again anything that resembles a molting crayfish such as orange, purple or green. Perch colored reaction baits worked as well. When the wind dies, sliding out to the 15-20ft range to pick off a few fish that are not as spooked by your boat or the bright, flat or sunny conditions.

Fishing has remained consistent across the area over the past week. Water temps are still remaining in the mid to high 70's so being versitile each day is crucial. Moods of fish seem to change hourly so having the whole arsenal of crawlers, leeches and reaction baits available is key. Even with the warm water we are seeing fish still up in as shallow as 6-7ft of water at times, and if fished during the right "window" are the most active. There is also a consistent bite in 10-12ft and along deeper edges of structure on the main lake in 18-22ft. Key colors lately have been orange or anything with a little flash such as gold or chrome.

It was a busy week on Leech, which was highlighted by country music legend Dustin Lynch and some of his songwriters in the boat for a couple days while they are in MN for a show later this week.

Water temps in the high 70's to even touching 80 degrees in areas meant starting trips early in the morning and grinding for every bite. Jigs and crawlers or reaction baits were once again top producers this week. There were occasional days where a leech under a bobber would get bit as well. A few fish have moved back up shallow in 10-12ft in areas which are best fished early or late in the day. 18-22ft have also been productive during the afternoon hrs.

What a HOT but great last week of fishing on Leech Lake! Water temps are reaching the high 70s to tickling the 80 degree mark in some areas by mid day. We are still battling bug hatches along with the molting invertabrates which has the fish a little finicky some days. Reaction baits or nightcrawlers have been most productive in 12-15ft of water. Finding the bigger groups of fish where there is "competition" amoungst them is key. A bobber setup with a small jig and leech has also been working on calmer days.

Over the weekend Bradley Hasse and I jumped into our first Minnesota Tournament Trail event on Leech and took a respectable finish of 2nd each day. Each day was considered a seperate one day tournament. Keys for us were grinding and waiting until the right fish would activate, if even sometimes it was only for a window of 10 minutes or less. Stressful and exhausting but worth it in the end. Super fun to fish with him and watch him grow as an angler.

The Walleye bite has remained consistent in the area despite the smorgasbord of food options available! Lots of great quality fish hitting the net paired with days of limits when their moods are timed right. I have a few days open yet the 2nd and 3rd week of July.
