Ever wonder how the Spanish Peaks got their shape? Or why the dikes radiating out from them look like ancient walls stretching across the land? The story behind this landscape spans millions of years, and La Veta Trails' Geoheritage Initiative is dedicated to helping visitors read it.

Through scenic trails, guided experiences, and science-backed storytelling, the initiative connects the geology under your feet to the forces that shaped it. It's a whole new way to experience Huerfano and Las Animas Counties.

This summer is different. πŸš—πŸ”₯

Drought conditions mean Colorado's mountain corridors are highly vulnerable to rapid fire spread. Most human-caused wildfires start within a few hundred feet of a roadway, which is why CDOT and state partners launched the Drive Safe Colorado Summer campaign.

Before you hit the road:

πŸ”— Cross your chains (dragging chains spark wildfires)
πŸš— Save your brakes on steep grades
🚧 Expect construction on I-70 from Golden to Glenwood Springs
🌑️ Use paved pullouts to let your vehicle cool
🚭 Never toss ci******es or matches from your vehicle
