Great Sand Dunes might be the destination, but Medano Pass is the kind of route that makes you rethink the whole trip.

When the pass opens, the drive through Spanish Peaks Country becomes its own adventure: creek crossings, raw backcountry terrain, and the kind of scenery you can't get from the highway.

Start in Walsenburg, where the murals and the history give you something to slow down for. Then, slow down and roll through Gardner.

Art in the Park is back in La Veta on July 3 and 4!

The Spanish Peaks Arts Council turns 50 this year, Colorado turns 150, Huerfano County turns 165, and the country turns 250.

The annual arts and crafts fair features handmade work and original art in a variety of mediums, plus local food, right in town for both days.

La Veta's Independence Day parade runs Friday the 3rd and Cuchara holds theirs on Saturday the 4th, so the whole valley is moving this weekend.

The landscape around Spanish Peaks Country didn't happen by accident.

The dikes radiating out from the Spanish Peaks, the volcanic buttes rising from the plains, the rock formations carved by millions of years of geologic activity...all of it has a story.

La Veta Trails just launched a new Geoheritage Initiative webpage to help residents and visitors actually understand what they're looking at out here.

Through scenic trails, guided experiences, and science-backed storytelling, the initiative connects the land you're walking to the forces that shaped it.

It's a new way to experience Huerfano and Las Animas Counties. Explore it at the link. https://lavetatrails.org/geoheritage/

What do the Pyramids, Stonehenge, and the Spanish Peaks have in common?

Some believe they all sit at the intersection of “ley lines” - invisible energy pathways said to connect powerful places around the world.

And when you see the dramatic rock lines radiating from the Spanish Peaks, it’s easy to understand why the myth found its way here.

At the center stand:
⛰️ West Spanish Peak
⛰️ East Spanish Peak

The lines aren’t mystical, they’re 25-million-year-old volcanic dikes.

But powerful? Absolutely.

Maybe the “energy” is geology. Maybe it’s history. Maybe it’s simply standing somewhere that has mattered for generations.

Come feel it for yourself.

April showers bring May flowers. 🌷

All month long, the Walsenburg Downtown Revitalization Committee is raising funds for the vibrant, pictorial planters that make downtown Walsenburg one of the most welcoming Main Streets in southern Colorado.

These aren’t just flowers, they’re part of the Walsenburg Flower Planter Walking Tour, where each planter tells a story about the people, cultures, and landscapes that shape this place. Explore the tour: https://www.walkingwalsenburg.org/

Here's how to pitch in:
💛 Add a donation to your order at Gub Gub's (in-store or on Toast)

It's official. Out of all 43 state parks in Colorado, voters chose Lathrop State Park as their favorite. 🏆

Colorado's first state park, right here in Huerfano County, just won the State Parks Bracket. Not a seeded favorite. Not the biggest or the most well-known. Just a park that people love, chosen by the people who visit it.

Governor Jared Polis shared the news: "I am very excited that Lathrop was voted Colorado's favorite state park. Lathrop has a deep history in Colorado and was named Colorado's first state park in 1962. Since becoming a state park, Lathrop has become a boaters' and anglers' paradise, with fantastic views of the Spanish Peaks. I hope all Coloradans have a chance to visit Lathrop."

Two lakes. Views of the Spanish Peaks. Camping, fishing, boating, golf, hiking, and birding. All nestled at the base of the mountains in southern Colorado. If you haven't been yet, now's the time.

On Saturday, April 25 from 11am to 1pm, Colorado Parks & Wildlife is hosting an Earth Day seeding event at Lathrop State Park. Volunteers will help restore campground areas where grass has been damaged by construction and heavy use. Without reseeding, invasive plants move in, so this is your chance to help keep Lathrop healthy and beautiful for years to come.

📅 Saturday, April 25 | 11am–1pm
📍 Meet at the Lathrop Visitor Center
📝 Registration required. Spots are limited to 50 volunteers

Bring water, sunscreen, gloves, and dress in layers for changing weather. All ages welcome! Grab the family and come spend a couple hours giving back to one of the most beautiful parks in southern Colorado.
