Instead of texting “on my way,” just send this photo.

It’ll buy you a good five minutes. Guaranteed. Ten minutes. Where are you? Oh, well. When life gets blurry, watch out for bison. Deep. Real deep. Bison may be big, but they're also fast. They can run up to 35 miles per hour. Plus, they're extremely agile. You might say they’re pretty buff. Bison can also spin around quickly, jump high, and are strong swimmers. If they could only get on a bicycle, they’d be much more successful during triathlon season.

When you ask someone for directions and they start using words like “east” and west.”

Thanks for the geography lesson. National parks offer breathtaking views and a multitude of fun activities you can enjoy with friends and family. You can experience a park through hiking, picnicking, kayaking, camping, or rock climbing, just to name a few. Walking? What about walking? For sure. No matter what activity you choose, it’s important to plan ahead. Make a fun adventure a safe adventure! Bring a map and guides, download the NPS App, and be prepared for minor injuries, sudden weather changes, or unexpected delays.

Pass the salad, please. Did you know bison primarily eat grasses, weeds and leafy plants — typically foraging for nine to 11 hours a day.

When the waiter comes by to ask, "How's everything tasting so far?"

This small mammal is called a pika and is actually a relative to the rabbit. You'll see this little critter in rocky alpine and sub-alpine zones feeding on the vegetation that fringes its preferred rocky talus slopes. Because pikas do not hibernate, they have to gather piles of drying vegetation, called haystacks, during the short growing season to survive the winter. These tiny mammals are about the size of a hamster or small guinea pig and are very sensitive to temperatures above 77.9 F (25.5 C), so they are mostly active during cooler parts of the day.

Next time you find yourself in their preferred type of habitat, listen for their distinctive high-pitched, whistle-like call ("mew!").

😮Bison calf just a few minutes old. From :

Each spring, playful and energetic bison calves or "red dogs" join the herd. Standing out with their small size and bright reddish-orange coat, their bursts of energy are magical moments filled with awkward jumps, uncoordinated sprints and joyful reactions as they learn and grow.

Just minutes old, this newborn with its mom fights against a slight breeze to balance and hold itself up for the first time.

Pro tip: Enjoy the Ride! There’s often wildlife in the road.

Observe posted speed limits and use pullouts to watch wildlife, take pictures, and let other cars pass. Help ensure everyone’s safety by not stopping your vehicle in the road. When pulling over, be sure to park with all four tires fully to the right of the white line. 🥰

Yellowstone is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states (67 species). Many of those can be found on the park’s northern range. Sometimes right next to each other.
