Tonight at the Harbor Table, learn about our beautiful brownstone courthouse, just a stone's throw from us.
The Washburn Heritage Association and the Washburn Area Museum present the final program of the 14th Annual Tony Woiak Summer History Festival on Tuesday, August 5th at 7:30p.m.
The topic will be 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱/𝗟𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝟭𝟴𝟰𝟱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻 and presented by Judge John Anderson. Tickets are $5 and students are free. The event will be held at the Harbor View Event Center.
Construction on the current courthouse began in 1894, two years after the county seat moved to Washburn, and was completed in 1896. The Neoclassical building features a domed cupola and a portico with Corinthian columns as its front entrance. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 1975. Many buildings in Washburn and the surrounding communities are made of “Apostle Brownstone”. This rich, dark rock is responsible for Northern Wisconsin’s remarkable sea caves, cliffs, and rock formations. Soft enough to allow for intricate carving, it was also durable, and its dark color made it a popular building material.
