🍷For wine travelers, Loudoun County offers many of the qualities found in the world’s great wine regions: fertile soils, historic scenery, charming villages, and a lingering sense of a bygone era.
🏘️The historic tiny village of Lincoln, located just 10 miles south of Leesburg, embodies those same qualities.
🏘️Originally known as Goose Creek, the community was first settled by Quakers in the eighteenth century on lands long used by Indigenous peoples as seasonal hunting grounds and trade routes. Guided by principles of equality and peace, the Quaker community became one of Virginia’s most remarkable centers of abolitionist thought.
⚔️During the Civil War, Lincoln’s Quaker community endured nearby fighting at Katy’s Hollow (the last battle fought in Loudoun County) and the devastation of the Union’s Burning Raid of 1864, while continuing to care for wounded soldiers from both sides.
🇺🇸After the war, residents renamed their village “Lincoln” in honor of Abraham Lincoln, an extraordinary choice for a Southern community that reflected convictions they had long held.
📸Today, much of the landscape remains remarkably unchanged. Historic farms, stone walls, and centuries-old buildings preserve a continuity rarely found in modern America. It is this inseparable relationship between people and place that gives Lincoln its unique Historoir.
And the land itself is equally compelling.
Lincoln benefits from rolling hills, excellent air drainage, and soils rich in greenstone, quartz, and clay. Together, these conditions have helped make this corner of Loudoun County uniquely special.
🍇On our most recent visit, we stopped at Endhardt Vineyards in search of a wine experience that would help us better appreciate the connection between land and heritage, and we founded it in their 2023 Upper Block Sauvignon Blanc: Light-bodied, elegant, and with wonderful herbal & floral notes ; this wine is balanced, contemplative, and authentic, with a timeless sense of place.
For serious wine travelers, Lincoln and Endhardt are worth seeking out, offering a compelling blend of historoir and terroir.
