In our latest Substack article, we revisited Maryland’s Southern Plain Wine Region.
This region, deeply rooted in agricultural heritage, benefits from the same terroir that was once well suited for to***co cultivation. Temperatures moderated by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, along with a relatively long growing season, are now proving to be well suited for viticulture.
The region also offers a plethora of well preserved historic sites. On this journey, however, we focused on two important chapters of the region’s history: Port To***co and Haberdeventure, the home of Founding Father Thomas Stone.
From there, our journey took us through the nearby charming town of La Plata in search of an authentic lunch spot and one of Maryland’s most famous delicacies: the Maryland Blue Crab Cake.
Looking for a great white wine to pair with our day, we visited Janemark Winery & Vineyard Janemark Winery + Vineyard , a boutique winery located on a family property dating back to 1877.

It had taken us a little while to Wine Travel through this region again, and we were glad we did. It reminded us once more why we do what we do. It is difficult to care deeply about something we know little about, and that’s why wine travel is so important to us. Somewhere between the first stop of the morning and the wine tasting in the afternoon, a connecting “domino effect” begins to form. It is something we have observed repeatedly during our tours: the more connections people make with a place, the more meaningful that place tends to become.
