🌅 A Magical Sunrise at Tres Cruces: Celebrating the New Andean Year 🌄

Yesterday, we celebrated the start of a new Andean year following Inca traditions. In Cusco, Peru, there's a magical place for this event: the Tres Cruces viewpoint in Paucartambo.

Here, the sun rises through a blanket of clouds, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Some people said that there are only two places in the world where this phenomenon occurs, the other being Mount Fuji in Japan.

During the winter solstice, when the sun is at its farthest point from the Earth, the Incas greeted the sun with dances and songs, full of joy and gratitude, thanking it for its light and warmth and asking it not to go away.

On June 20th, this celebration, which had been interrupted by the pandemic, returned to Paucartambo with great enthusiasm.

Corpus Christi is a Catholic festival that celebrates the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. In Cusco, this celebration is especially significant and is carried out with great fervor. This year on May 30th, 2024, the streets of Cusco are adorned with decorated altars and flowers. The procession is led by saints and virgins, each coming from different parishes and communities in Cusco.

The celebration of Corpus Christi in Cusco is an example of cultural syncretism, where Catholic traditions have merged with Andean customs. This festival reinforces the cultural and religious identity of the people of Cusco, being one of the most important celebrations in the local festive calendar.

I recently embarked on a mesmerizing journey to Yanahuara in Cusco, a hidden sanctuary renowned for hummingbird watching. Let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical!

With over 300 species of hummingbirds in the world, primarily found in the Americas, Peru is a true haven, hosting more than 100 species. The Cusco region alone is home to 65 species of these beautiful birds.
