The Getty Museum, a temple to art, is the American version of the ancient acropolis. Four modern buildings made of white travertine marble perch on a lush hillside overlooking Los Angeles and require a ritual ascent in a computer-operated tram. Richard Meier designed the complex and Robert Irwin designed the garden, completed in 1997. As you learn in the tram ride going up—the Getty is comprised of a world-class museum of art from the middle ages to the present, a conservation laboratory, a foundation, and one of the largest art libraries in the world. As you can see from the photographs, the Getty is the most beautiful museum in the world, with break-taking views of the sprawling city, Bel Air mansions, and, on a clear day, the Pacific Ocean.
