The New York State Senate has adopted a resolution recognizing India’s Independence Day, a move that celebrates not only India’s freedom struggle but also the growing influence of Indian Americans across the state. The bipartisan resolution urges Governor Kathy Hochul to officially proclaim 15 August 2026, as “India Independence Day” in New York, highlighting the deep cultural and democratic ties shared by India and the USA.
Leading the effort is Indian-American Democratic State Senator Jeremy Cooney, whose own story embodies the India-US connection. Born in an orphanage in Kolkata, Cooney was adopted by a single mother and raised in New York. When he was elected to the New York State Senate in 2020, he made history as the first Asian American elected to state office from upstate New York. By sponsoring this resolution, Cooney has brought a piece of his heritage to one of America’s most influential state legislatures.
Lawmakers from both parties voiced support, praising the contributions of Indian Americans in business, healthcare, education, technology, public service, and community leadership. Several senators also noted that New York is home to one of the nation’s largest and most vibrant Indian-American communities.
For Indian Americans in New York and beyond, the Senate’s action is more than a symbolic gesture. It is an acknowledgment of their heritage, achievements, and enduring contributions to the fabric of American society while honoring the historic journey of the world’s largest democracy.
