👉 Swipe to learn more about WHAT, WHY and WHERE to celebrate Emancipation Day in DC 📍

On April 16th 1862, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act which ended slavery in Washington, DC. The act freed 3,100 enslaved individuals, reimbursed those who had legally held them as property and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate.

It’s this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that DC residents commemorate and celebrate each year.
