Here’s one of those little things I love about cruising: traditions you rarely encounter anywhere else in travel.

Cruising still carries echoes of the grand hospitality of ocean crossings — some elegant, some historic… and some just plain quirky.

Like towel animals.

A creative room steward can turn a couple of towels into a daily “surprise and delight” moment — sometimes complete with accessories and personality.

But I wonder if towel animals are open to interpretation?

When I found this one in my stateroom on an Emerald river cruise over Easter, I thought: bunny! 🐰

But I may have been wrong.

The next time you visit Amsterdam, there’s something you WON’T see:
Ads for cruises.
Ads for flights.
And a whole lot more.

Amsterdam is the first capital city in the world to ban them.

I was just in the Netherlands — and it's true! It’s really happening.

But why would one of Europe’s biggest cruise and tourism cities stop advertising cruises and flights?

The CDC inspects cruise ships for cleanliness. But there’s one thing it does NOT inspect: us.

Thanks to Fox News for interviewing me about the CDC’s latest Vessel Sanitation Program report — and giving me the opportunity to put the results into perspective.

The report shows just how seriously cruise lines take sanitation and how well cruise ships are doing at maintaining clean, healthy environments for travelers.

But even the cleanest ship is only as healthy as the people who come aboard.

That’s a good reminder that we all need to take personal responsibility for staying healthy when we cruise — or travel anywhere. And one of the simplest, most effective things we can do?

Wash our hands!
