We are always up to something over here... aren't we?! 💃🧐

We are celebrating the holidays with the 12 Days of Wine! It's a case of full-sized bottles from 12 different producers around Seneca Lake. So, while you know which producers are included, you don't know what wines are inside. Who doesn't love surprises?! 🎁🍾

And this year, we've upped the ante: hidden inside 12 of the 300 cases is a Golden Ticket (okay, in the interest of transparency, it's red, but hey, we didn't want you to just throw it out!) and the finders of those Golden Tickets will receive tickets for two to attend Spring Wine and Cheese 2025. 🎟🧀

Nerves of Shale: Critical work taking place today in the gorge at Watkins Glen State Park at Rainbow Falls—arguably the most photographed spot here in the Finger Lakes. Brave men and women from the New York State Parks Rope Access Team are rappelling down the imposing gorge walls, removing loose rock. You should see some of the dead trees and loose rock that have been picked here, some can be seen on the bottom left of this image. This process happens each spring BEFORE the popular gorge trails can open for the season. This saves park goers from injury and even worse. I’ll have more on this soon here on the page. I always enjoy documenting the work these brave souls perform to ensure these treasures are safe.

The picture worth a thousand words about our cool climate wine region... we may have gotten our first draping of snow, but it's still an overall mild winter so far (it's supposed to be in the mid to upper 40s in just a couple days). But when it gets cold, like REALLY cold, it's our lakes that create slightly warmer microclimates for our vineyards. Seneca and Cayuga are incredibly deep, so they rarely (almost never) cool fast enough to freeze over completely and instead, they radiate warmer air. ⁣

In this 2014 photo (remember that polar vortex?), Keuka was frozen over, which is actually quite a rare occurance. Seneca last froze over in 1912, and Cayuga in 1979.

I told you it's amazing here, even in January! We were cosied up on the couch watching a movie, (after an AMAZING dinner at Graft, and stopping at Watkins bottle shop for just a little more wine), and suddenly we hear popping noises. Front row seat to the Ice Festival fireworks from the comfort of the couch!
