Have You Ever Wondered About the Bird in the WCVB Logo?

It’s not a heron — it’s an EGRET!

The egret was intentionally chosen as part of the Waycross Convention & Visitors Bureau (WCVB) identity because of what it represents and its connection to our beautiful South Georgia landscape.

Egrets are graceful wading birds commonly found throughout the wetlands and waterways of our region, including the Okefenokee. For WCVB, the egret represents:

🌿 Natural Beauty — celebrating the incredible landscape and wildlife of South Georgia.

🐊 Our Okefenokee Connection — connecting Waycross with one of the most unique and recognizable natural treasures in the world.

🪽 Exploration & Travel — representing movement, discovery and an invitation to explore.

🤝 Hospitality & Welcome — reflecting the warm and welcoming spirit visitors experience in Waycross.

🌎 Conservation & Heritage — reminding us that our natural environment is an important part of the history, identity and future of our region.

Most importantly, the egret helps tell a story that stretches from Downtown Waycross to the Okefenokee and everything in between.

And speaking of Downtown Waycross… 👀

We are currently working on a new Main Street Waycross logo! The new identity will blend elements and inspiration from the WCVB, City of Waycross, and Ware County brands to create something uniquely Waycross.

This new Main Street brand will be designed to work across merchandise, promotions, marketing, events, and Main Street membership, helping us build a recognizable identity for Downtown Waycross as we continue to grow and revitalize our Main Street program.

We can’t wait for you to see it! 🎉

So, the next time you see the WCVB logo, remember — that’s not a heron. It’s our egret, and it represents South Georgia.

We’re excited to share a first look at the proposed Waycross Gateway Cultural & Visitors Center in Downtown Waycross.

The goal is to create a welcoming place where visitors can learn about Waycross and Ware County, explore our history and culture, plan their stay, and connect with local attractions, businesses, restaurants, and events.

Located downtown, the proposed center would help direct visitors into the heart of our community while bringing visitor services, cultural programming, art exhibits, business resources, and community activities together under one roof. Planned features include a visitor information hub, interactive kiosks, rotating galleries, heritage displays, meeting areas, a multipurpose event space, and an outdoor plaza for markets and performances.

This project has the potential to:

• Strengthen Downtown Waycross as a destination
• Increase foot traffic for downtown shops, restaurants, and businesses
• Encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more locally
• Showcase our history, arts, culture, and connection to the Okefenokee
• Provide resources for entrepreneurs and community partners
• Create space for exhibits, workshops, performances, markets, and public events
• Establish a visible and welcoming gateway to Waycross and Ware County

Join us for the Hurricane Prep Rally, a fun, family-friendly event designed to help our community prepare for hurricanes, severe weather, and other emergencies. Whether you're building your first emergency plan or updating your preparedness supplies, you'll find valuable information, resources, and expert guidance to help keep your family safe.

At this free community event, you can:

✅ Learn how to better prepare for disasters and emergencies
✅ Hear from emergency preparedness experts
✅ Discover important steps to take before, during, and after a disaster
✅ Connect with local organizations and service providers
✅ Enjoy family-friendly activities and educational experiences for kids

This event is also an opportunity for community partners to connect with residents and share valuable resources. We welcome participation from local banks, insurance agencies, utility providers, tree service companies, contractors, healthcare organizations, communication providers, emergency response agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other businesses or groups that play a role in helping our community prepare for and recover from emergencies.
