Connecting Hearts and Bread for the Soul are fitting names that reflects the heart of one of Warrior Women’s most altruistic woman of God and entrepreneur. Chaplain Marla Porter, also lovingly known as Grandma, Mom, Sis. Marla, and Chaplain Marla, has a deep love for people that is evident in the many ways she uses her skills to bless others. Today’s feature shows more of Chaplain Marla’s heart for serving and how Connecting Hearts and Bread for the Soul came into existence.
As one always actively involved in her church and community, when she moved to Waycross, she “looked for ways to serve and get connected with others. I joined a group with Mama Jean and others, who were ministering weekly in three different nursing homes in the area. ”Chaplain Porter stayed active with this group for its duration and was subsequently given the opportunity to lead weekly Sunday morning worship for the residents of Harborview Satilla.
She loves connecting with the residents and getting them to connect with each other. “They can encourage each other, read the Word together, and worship together in the common area.” This is a precious time of hearts connecting with God and with each other through the singing, Bible teaching, praying, and encouraging each other.
Despite COVID restrictions, Chaplain Porter continues to stay connected with the residents as much as possible by sending cards and treats that she prepares herself or with the assistance of her church family. Chaplain Porter says, “God has truly blessed me to be creative in many ways. At the time of this interview, she was “making fleece caps for children and adults. I'll soon be making more double layered masks since there is still a need for them.” In 2020, she made 231 masks that were given to family, friends, elementary schools, Indian reservations, and nursing homes, at no cost.
Identifying areas where she can use her creativity to meet needs and connect with others has been a way of life, but she never named her ministry. It took an assignment as a student in the Southeast Georgia (SEGA) Bible Institute, for Chaplain Porter to see all her acts of service were centered around Connecting Hearts.
In addition to her many ways of connecting hearts, Chaplain Porter bakes Bread for the Soul. “ I love to bake and during the fall months and holiday season, I bake banana bread and pumpkin bread with or without walnuts. I will begin baking these the middle of August to the middle of September. The breads are an avenue for bringing joy and the Word to others. Scriptures are inserted in the packing to make one think about their spiritual walk, or to share the scriptures with others. Breads are provided for a donation of $6; with a portion going directly to the church’s benevolence ministry.
Chaplain Porter finds great joy in sharing the love of God through creative ways using her God given skills. As she continues to connect hearts, and bake bread for the soul, be sure to watch for opportunities join Chaplain Porter in creatively connecting hearts and sharing the Word.
