The Pigeon River Watershed is a headwaters watershed, meaning the source of the river originates within the watershed boundaries, exiting downstream to join other bodies of water; rivers, lakes. etc. Haywood County and the Pigeon River Watershed boundaries line up to create one of the few overlaps in the country, where a headwaters watershed resides within the county boundary. The Pigeon River begins as rain across the Great Balsams, as high as 6,410' and winds its way through the county, moving northward, till it merges with the French Broad River in Newport, TN. The Pigeon River watershed and Haywood County is the highest source of water for the French Broad River and one of the highest sources of freshwater in the Southeast. It all starts here.
