A hike worth making can’t wait to experience those view!

One of North Carolina’s most incredible views comes from the Wayah Bald fire tower, where a stone lookout sits high above the mountains in the Nantahala National Forest. Built in 1937, this tower still stands strong today and is open for visitors to walk right inside. You can climb up and step out onto the deck at the top, where the views open up in every direction. From here, you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the long ridges that follow the Appalachian Trail. On a clear day, you can see for miles, with layer after layer of mountains stretching out into the distance. Deep valleys cut through the land below, and the wide ridge of Wayah Bald runs out around you. It only takes a short and easy walk from the parking area to reach the tower, making this one of the simplest ways to take in such a big, wide mountain view any time of year.

Beautiful pathway along the Oconaluftee river.

For one of the Smoky Mountains' most stunning riverside walks complete with potential elk sightings, head to the Oconaluftee River Trail in the small mountain town of Cherokee, North Carolina. This easy 1.5-mile path starts at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and follows right along the river as it makes its way into town. It’s common to see elk grazing in the fields near the visitor center or standing in the shallow water beside the trail. In warmer months, wildflowers bloom along the edges, and thick rhododendron and mountain laurel grow along the banks. The clear river flows beside you the whole time, and you can often spot trout moving through the water. Right near the start, the Mountain Farm Museum has old log cabins that show how families lived here back in the 1800s. The walk is flat, shaded, and full of peaceful mountain views from beginning to end.

In the little North Carolina mountain town of Cherokee...you’ll find one of the most unexpected spots in the Smokies, known as the “Bamboo Forest of the Great Smoky Mountains.” It sits inside Oconaluftee Island Park, tucked away but easy to reach. A narrow dirt path winds through a thick patch of bamboo on a small island in the Oconaluftee River, and you get there by crossing a couple short footbridges. The bamboo grows tall, some of it close to 40 feet high, and it lines both sides of the trail so tightly that it feels like you’re walking through a tunnel. The shade keeps it cool even on warm days, and it feels completely different from the rest of the mountains around you. It almost feels like you stepped into another country. No one really knows how the bamboo got here, which adds to the mystery. Along the edges, the river runs clear and shallow, making it a perfect place to step in, relax, and take in the quiet setting.
