The Steam Engine Wreck of the Smoky Mountains lies hidden deep in the woods, resting in the creek bed of I***n Creek. This Nichols and Shepard steam-powered traction engine once powered a sawmill in the 1920s, cutting lumber for the old Greenbrier School. On its return trip, the driver reportedly failed to navigate a sharp switchback, sending the heavy engine tumbling down the mountainside where it still remains today. Interestingly, the name "I***n Creek" is believed to be a mapmaker’s misspelling of the word “engine.” To see the wreck for yourself, hike the Grapeyard Ridge Trail—a 5.8-mile round-trip trek. At around 2.85 miles in, you’ll reach the top of an incline before descending into the creek bed, where the rusted engine lies. Along the way, you’ll also pass remnants of the long-lost ghost town of Greenbrier, making this one of the Smokies’ most unique and historic hikes.
