Great news for paddlers and floaters! 🚣‍♀️🌊

Renovations at the Jacob's Creek Dan River Access (558 Planters Road, Madison) are now complete, and the access is officially open for use as both a river put-in and take-out location. When taking out, be sure to look for the natural, boulder-style stairs on the right side of the river.

Looking to plan your next river adventure? The next access downstream is Settle Bridge (286 Dan River Road, Madison), approximately 4.25 miles away. That makes for a paddle of about 3+ hours or a relaxing float of 4+ hours, depending on river conditions and your pace.

While the river access is ready to welcome visitors, the rest of the park remains under construction as additional amenities are added. Exciting features still to come include an interactive native plant trail, a pollinator garden, and more enhancements designed to help visitors connect with the natural beauty of the Dan River corridor.

We invite you to enjoy the new access (while responsibly leaving no trace and wearing your life jacket, of course) and stay tuned as this exciting recreation destination continues to grow!

Although this is not news we want to hear, the weather for this Memorial Day weekend sounds less than inviting for river and lake goers anyway.

But not to fear! We at Visit RoCo plan to keep you in the know on how you can still ! Keep an eye on our page this weekend and check out our post from this morning on ways you can enjoy RoCo this weekend, all while staying warm and dry indoors.

We will also be having an exciting announcement next week with a new and improved alternative for navigating the Dan River on the western side of the county.

Stay tuned!

We're mad, you going to be mad, we're all mad................

But, we regret to inform you that the Madison River Park will close immediately and not reopen until the take out under the NC 704 bridge is complete. Until 4:00 this afternoon, Thursday, May 21, 2026 we thought all was a go and tubers, kayakers, etc would be able to exit the river safely at the new Madison River Park Downtown beach access. That was until we received notice advising that opening the site to unrestricted public recreational use while construction operations remain ongoing may materially increase the risk of injury to third parties and may create uncertainty regarding responsibility for site security, maintenance, damage to the work, and liability arising from public use of incomplete improvements.

With this and in consultation with our Town Attorney, we were advised that it would be negligent to open the Madison River Park since there was no viable take out at the Downtown Park and normal take out location. Further it is a huge safety issue and we should and have always chosen safety first.

I can say that no one is happy about this, the Board of Aldermen and Town Management were extremely distraught with having to close the park. We don't like it and we know you don't like; however, we can not take any risk of someone getting injured. Our priority is safety first - We sincerely apologize as we have no choice but to close both the Madison River Park and Madison River Park Downtown until the take is safely accessible.

There's not enough ways to say we're sorry and that we are beyond frustrated😡😡😡 Our hope is that both parks will be open within 30 days.

☔ Don’t let this weekend’s less-than-favorable weather outlook keep you from visiting RoCo this Memorial Day Weekend! 🇺🇸

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of river tubing season in Rockingham County — and there’s no better way to kick off summer than floating our beautiful rivers. ☀️🛶

Before you hit the water, we always recommend working with one of our local tubing outfitters/rental companies:
🌊 MadTown Tubing (Madison) — opening day May 23
🌊 Basecamp (Mayodan) — currently offering tube rentals only
🌊 The Floatery (Madison) — opening for the season the weekend of May 29

Why work with an outfitter? They know the rivers best. From current conditions and safe access points to transportation options, equipment, and parking logistics, outfitters help make your day on the river safer, easier, and more enjoyable. They also monitor weather and water levels so you can float with confidence.

Whether you’re planning a relaxing family float or a fun day with friends, let the pros help you enjoy the river responsibly this season.

📍Plan your float. Respect the river. Support local outfitters and rental companies.
