Pebble Creek Golf Course is proof that 9 holes can still give you plenty of golf. ⛳️

Located in LeClaire, Iowa, this Michael Benkusky-designed course opened in 2005 and stretches to more than 3,400 yards from the back tees.

What really stands out here are the greens. They’re large, undulating, and full of slopes, valleys, and side-hill putts that can make even a good approach shot interesting.

Pebble Creek also has a small putting and chipping area right next to the course, plus a nearby independently operated driving range that is typically open throughout the season.

If you’re in the Quad Cities area and want a fun 9-hole track with some real personality, Pebble Creek is worth checking out.

Hickory Grove Golf Course proves you don’t need 18 holes to have a complete golf experience. ⛳️

Located in Oelwein, Iowa, this par-36 nine-hole course is widely regarded as one of the better nine-hole tracks in the state, and after our visit, it’s easy to see why.

The course itself is a fun challenge with large, undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and a layout that has continued to improve over the years. More than 100 trees have been removed from the property, helping open up the course and create room for new bunkers and more playable angles.

The greens were a major highlight for us — smooth, quick, and full of contour.

And the practice setup might be just as impressive as the course. Hickory Grove has a massive putting green, driving range, short-game area, and a dedicated wedge setup with targets at multiple distances.

Inside, the clubhouse has a well-stocked pro shop, drinks, snacks, and plenty of golf essentials, plus an outdoor patio to hang out before or after your round.

Saukie Golf Course is proof that a course doesn’t have to be long to be a challenge. ⛳️

Located in Rock Island, Illinois, right across the river from Iowa in the Quad Cities, this 18-hole municipal course plays just over 5,000 yards to a par 66 — but don’t let the scorecard fool you.

Built in 1927 and designed by Thomas Bendelow, Saukie brings a classic feel with small greens, deep ravines, mature oak trees, and some seriously demanding par 3s. Accuracy matters here, and missing your spot can quickly turn a short hole into a tough one.

The course also has a clubhouse, pro shop, snack bar, indoor golf simulator, and a small putting green to get ready before the round.

For anyone golfing in the Quad Cities, Saukie is a fun, affordable, and historic municipal track worth checking out.

Shoreline Golf Club absolutely blew us away. ⛳️
Located in Carter Lake, Iowa, just minutes from downtown Omaha, this 18-hole par-72 course gives you one of the more unique golf settings in the area — with Carter Lake alongside the property and the Omaha skyline showing up in the background on several holes.
The course was in fantastic shape during our visit. The fairways were striped, the greens were rolling beautifully, and the combination of water, bunkers, trees, and strategic tee shots gives you plenty to think about throughout the round.
Our personal favorites were holes 4 and 11. Both give you some incredible views across the lake and were easily two of the most memorable holes from our visit.
Shoreline also has a solid practice setup with a driving range, large putting green, and chipping area, plus a clubhouse with a pro shop and indoor dining space.
If you’re golfing in the Omaha / Council Bluffs area, don’t overlook this one. Shoreline is absolutely worth adding to the list.

Honey Creek Golf Club might be one of the most dramatic golf courses in Iowa. ⛳️
Located in Boone, Iowa, this 18-hole championship course brings elevation, mature trees, prairie-style visuals, bentgrass fairways, and some seriously fun shot-making.
The front nine gives you a chance to settle in, but the back nine is where Honey Creek really starts to show its teeth.
Hole 11 is one of the most memorable par 3s we’ve played this season — a steep downhill shot where 200 yards can play closer to 160, and the ball feels like it falls forever.
Then comes “The Honey Trap” — holes 13 through 16 — a stretch packed with elevation changes, tough angles, and holes where making par feels like a win.
The course also has a massive elevated driving range, a putting and chipping green near the first tee, a pro shop, food and drinks, and an outdoor patio for events or outings.
If you want a unique Iowa golf test with views, elevation, and plenty of challenge, Honey Creek belongs on your list.

Rice Lake Golf & Country Club is a northern Iowa course worth making the trip for. ⛳️
Located in Lake Mills, Iowa, Rice Lake brings together history, scenery, water, trees, strategic bunkering, and smooth bentgrass greens in a layout that is fun, playable, and still challenging when you miss your spots.
Originally designed in 1922 and expanded to 18 holes in 1979, this par-71 course plays just over 6,200 yards from the back tees and offers a great test for golfers of all skill levels.
The practice facilities were also a major highlight. Rice Lake has a driving range with two tee areas, multiple targets, a short-game area with a practice bunker, wedge markers, a chipping green, and a large putting green near the clubhouse.
After the round, the restaurant and bar give you a great place to relax, with indoor dining, porch seating, and a wrap-around patio overlooking the property.

Amana Colonies Golf Club is our home course for a reason. ⛳️

Located in Amana, Iowa, just outside of Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, this par-72 course stretches to around 6,800 yards from the tips and is easily one of our favorite public golf courses in the state.
This place does not feel like typical eastern Iowa golf. With rolling hills, tree-lined holes, elevation changes, bunkers throughout the course, and views that make every hole feel tucked away in nature, Amana feels more like something you’d find in the Ozarks or Missouri.
Every time we come back, we appreciate it more.
The course also has a large putting and chipping green, a driving range with grass and mat options, range balls included with your tee time, a well-stocked pro shop, two indoor simulators, food and drinks, and a patio overlooking the course.
A huge thank you to the entire team at Amana Colonies Golf Club for welcoming us this season and making every visit a great one. The property is incredible, but the people behind it are what make it special.
If you’re planning an Iowa golf trip, a boys trip to eastern Iowa, or just looking for one of the best public golf experiences in the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area, Amana belongs on the bucket list.

Woodland Hills Golf Course gives you more than one way to play in Des Moines. ⛳️
Located on the north side of Des Moines with easy access to I-35 and I-80, Woodland Hills is a public golf facility with an 18-hole regulation course, an Executive 9, short-game practice areas, a stocked pro shop, food and drinks, outdoor patio space, and even their own signature Woodland Hills Summer Shandy brewed by Backpocket Brewing.
The 18-hole course is fun, approachable, and always seems to be in solid shape when we’re in town. With minimal water, no sand, and a layout that works for a wide range of golfers, it’s a great option for a casual round in the metro.
The Executive 9 is another great piece of the property — a par-29 course with seven par 3s and two par 4s, designed for walking and perfect for beginners, juniors, families, or anyone looking to play a quicker round.
Whether you’re playing 18, walking the Executive 9, working on the short game, or grabbing a Summer Shandy on the patio, Woodland Hills is worth a stop.

Spencer Golf & Country Club felt like the perfect course to post on the 4th of July. 🇺🇸⛳️
Located in Spencer, Iowa, this semi-private 18-hole course is a true northwest Iowa gem. When we visited, the American flags were flying across the property, the course was in phenomenal shape, and even after rain the night before, everything played beautifully.
The layout has a classic country club feel with tree-lined holes, doglegs, well-placed bunkers, and greens that make you think on approach shots. It’s fun, challenging, and extremely well maintained.
Spencer is also home to the historic Northwest Amateur Golf Tournament, a 72-hole amateur event that has been played since 1921.
Off the course, the clubhouse and newly renovated restaurant were major highlights, with plenty of food, drinks, and space to hang out after the round. Add in the driving range, putting green, and chipping area, and this is a great northwest Iowa golf stop.
