Daniel Crews-Chubb | Statuesque

Opening Reception Saturday, September 16th, 6 – 8pm

Roberts Projects is pleased to announce Statuesque, Daniel Crews-Chubb’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

Comprising seven ambitious mixed-media paintings and six studies on paper, Statuesque presents a wide-ranging exploration of the artist’s relationship to historic artifacts.

Crews-Chubb is a magpie for figurative sculpture across time and culture, collecting their poses, volumes, and ornaments. The artist has developed a powerful visual language connecting sources of inspiration from fearsome Aztec deities to Henry Moore’s deconstructed reclining women, reflecting on our obsessive repetition of the human form in sculpture.

On view now, Suchitra Mattai; In the absence of power. In the presence of love.

The pendulous “fruit” (“phala” in Hindi) soft sculptures within the exhibition exist in a symbiotic relationship with the environment. Suspended and organic, the sculptures infuse the exhibition space with the artist’s ancestry and Indo-Caribbean identity. This is the first time the artist is utilizing braided saris to create this type of installation, creating a space where the aura of female bodies and spirits are present.

The exhibition runs through August 26th. Roberts Projects is open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm

Join us this Saturday July 15th from 6-8 pm. Roberts Projects is pleased to present a new exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Suchitra Mattai ()

In the absence of power, In the presence of love presents new mixed-media paintings, tapestries, and a soft-sculpture installation that evoke the artist!s Indo-Caribbean heritage.

Mattai’s work engages with the subject and form of European pastoral landscapes and figuration as well as Indian miniature paintings. Linking craft-based processes, sumptuous weavings and traditional techniques, the artist portrays resolute brown heroines, replacing heroes and colonizers and reclaiming a patriarchal past.

Mia Middleton () has three new works on view as part of our group show Wanderlust in gallery two.

Middleton whose show Love Story closed last month at Roberts Projects was recently interviewed by Kayla Curtis-Evans in Office magazine (). “Many of Middleton’s visceral oil paintings conjure familiar poignant feelings, feelings of longing, sadness, or comfort — but this choice of emotion is wholly up to the viewer.”

Amoako Boafo () is one of 42 artists to create limited-edition plates to benefit the Coalition for the Homeless.

The funds raised by the sale of plates will provide food, crisis services, housing, and other critical aid to thousands of people experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The purchase of just one plate can feed more than 100 homeless and hungry individuals.

The first 75 of each artists edition size will be available for purchase at Frieze NY . Sales will be live May 22nd at 10 AM EST

Mia Middleton () is a Sydney-based artist whose pictorial works explore interiority, memory, and evocation. Middleton’s small-scale paintings capture a tension and threshold between conscious and subconscious, desire and aversion, reality, and fantasy. In these intimate freeze-frames, ephemeral moments are stripped of their context and suspended in time, intimating a narrative without creating one and inviting viewers into a psychological framework of uncertainty and discovery. This is her first exhibition with Roberts Projects.

Tidal Wave of Colour
April 22 – June 3, 2023

Roberts Projects is pleased to present Tidal Wave of Colour, the newest body of work by artist Wangari Mathenge and her first major show in the United States. In this series, Mathenge takes as her subject major works from the art historical canon as a means to reevaluate and revise conventional narratives around gender, class, and race, and how they interact with one another across historical spheres. The title takes its inspiration from civil rights icon Malcolm X, who used the phrase to capture the post-second World War zeitgeist of global revolution; between 1945 to 1955, ideas about liberation and independence permeated the world, and as a result, Africa, Asia, and Latin America revolted in pursuit of decolonization.

Ed Templeton | Wires Crossed

In Wires Crossed, Ed Templeton (.templeton) shows the subculture of skateboarding from 1995 to 2012 through photographs, drawings and texts. Templeton is an artist, photographer and one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. During his many tours throughout America, Templeton recorded skate culture using his 50-mm camera. These snapshots show Templeton’s journey as a photographer and the lives of professional skateboarders – who were continually on the move, revelling in their newfound status as rock stars – and the search for new terrain to skate.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication, entitled Wires Crossed.
