Audible GASPS were heard throughout the Conference Center (& the world) as the ROME TEMPLE was announced in General Conference, October 2008 - in Italy, congregations of Saints watching by satellite let out SHOUTS OF JOY! (Followed by much hugging, smiling, & happy tears.) Ground was broken in 2010 and, after many years of construction, the completed temple was dedicated in March, 2019.
It is an architectural gem of beauty joining a city of historical gems of beauty! Even though its unique design of sacred architecture lifts the spirit, the eternal blessings it brings are personal and precious to the souls who partake of the ordinances, inside.

The HONOLULU TABERNACLE was the last tabernacle the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ever built! When the Oahu Stake was organized in 1935, leaders saw the need for the Church to have a more evident presence on the island. Stake Pres Ralph Woolley and Mission Pres Castle Murphy secured the location and construction began March 16, 1940. To help pay for the construction, fundraisers including "hukilaus" were held at the jobsite. These fresh-caught fish dinners were a hit! More than $60,000 of the $250,000 building funds were raised by faithful Hawaiian Saints.
Architects Hyrum Pope & Harold Burton also designed the temple in La'ie. President David O. McKay dedicated the building on Aug 17, 1941. He prayed that it would not experience any war-related damage; miraculously, the building was not damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor even though the tall steeple was one of the highest points in Honolulu!
The beautiful glass mosaic of the Savior at the main entrance was added later and remains the spiritual focus of the building with its beautiful gardens, Banyan tree, and water feature! (It's even on the DUP, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, registry!)
