Happy June 1st! The Countdown to summer break and summer vacations is on. As I look ahead to summer after a turbulent and intense 2026, I find myself continuously thinking about Collecting Moments, Not Checklists. You don’t have to see every sight, visit every museum, or check every box. Some of the best travel memories come from an extra hour at the beach, a playground with an aperol spritz seller nearby, or a conversation with a local (who told you about the playground) Planning is key, but leaving room for flexibility and experiencing the destination in the moment is what really makes trips special.
* Plan one main activity a day and book in advance. (I prefer morning activities with a flexible afternoon)
* Start Early. The kids are usually up and the best experiences happen before the crowds and heat arrive. Alternately, the evening is another great time to go back out and see sites.
* Get the kids involved - let them choose activities and research the destination. We love the Who What Where series. .
* Do less “research” on social media and go into the destination with an open mind. Let it influence you in the moment, phone free.
* Find the joy. Remember how lucky you are to be able to travel and let the small things go. Not every moment makes the highlight reel and I find that some of those snafus end up being the best memories.
Do you have any others to add?
