Up in the mountains, the riding takes center stage. Long climbs open into broad views, tighter sections work their way through the terrain, and the road keeps finding another way around the next ridge.

Then there are those stretches where everything comes together: clear mountain air, a motorcycle beneath you, good pavement ahead and enough time in the day to enjoy the road properly.

It's also the kind of country that suits riding with others. You share the route and the stops, then settle back into your own rhythm once the group gets moving again. By the next stop, there is usually a corner or two worth discussing.

Southern France gives you plenty of variety over the course of a riding day. High mountain landscapes, narrow passages through the rock, sweeping sections and quieter roads all have their place.

Six countries between Dubrovnik and Athens gives a rider plenty to talk about by the time the motorcycle reaches Greece.

The journey starts on Croatia's Adriatic coast before continuing through Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. From there, the route carries on through North Macedonia and Albania before reaching Greece.

Each border brings something new to the riding day. The landscape shifts, the food changes, road signs change language, and another part of the Balkans begins unfolding around you. By motorcycle, you experience those transitions mile by mile.

Along the way are places that deserve time of their own. Lake Ohrid has been part of life in this region for thousands of years. Meteora brings the route beneath its remarkable monasteries. Dubrovnik and Athens provide two memorable bookends.

Between those names are mountain roads, countryside, towns and stops that gradually connect six countries into one journey.

There are mornings on the Adriatic when leaving the hotel is very easy. The motorcycle is outside, the coast is ahead, and there is a full riding day between breakfast and wherever dinner happens to be.

Pearls of the Adriatic Sea begins in Split and brings together three countries that work remarkably well from the seat of a motorcycle: Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Some days keep you close to the water. Others turn inland toward mountain roads and places with centuries of history. Hvar, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Mostar all have a place in the journey, along with plenty of smaller stops that give the route its character.

There is time to get off the motorcycle, too. Walk through an old town, sit down for a proper meal, have another coffee and watch the Adriatic for a while. The motorcycle connects the places; it doesn't have to rush you through them.

And when it's time to ride again, the next section of road has already been planned. Hotels, luggage and the daily organization are taken care of, leaving more of the day for riding and enjoying where you've arrived.

September has a particularly good rhythm on a motorcycle in Europe.

The mornings are cooler, making the first coffee of the day especially welcome. By mid-morning, temperatures have settled in and there is still plenty of daylight ahead for riding.

The countryside begins to shift with the season as well. Vineyards, farms and smaller towns become part of what you notice between one good stretch of road and the next.

It is a fine time to give the stops a little more room. A local lunch. A walk through an old town. Another coffee because the place happens to be worth staying in for twenty more minutes.

For riders accustomed to Europe in the height of summer, early fall offers another very good way to travel through it — motorcycle first, with plenty to appreciate around the road.

Unpaved Pyrenees crosses Spain, Andorra and France with gravel, dirt and remote mountain tracks mixed into the route. It's riding for people who are already comfortable when the pavement ends and would rather find out where that track goes than turn around.
