My Grandfather introduced me to the buckeye, which he carried, always, in the pocket of his overalls, along with a handful of horehound cough drops. Thanks to him, my four-year-old vocabulary was richly peppered with words like sassafrass, buckeye, horehound, sumac, and one of my favorites, Indian ci**rs, the giant seed pods that hung heavy from the black locust tree outside my bedroom window.
