Today, I’m off to an unforgettable experience at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, nestled in the serene waters of Lake Victoria, Uganda. This lush, 95-acre forest haven is home to 52 rescued and orphaned chimpanzees, each with a heartbreaking past—but now, a safe future.

Established in 1998, the sanctuary was created to rescue chimps from the illegal pet and bushmeat trades across East Africa. Under the dedicated care of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust (Chimpanzee Trust), these incredible animals are given the chance to heal, roam freely, and live out their natural lives—some for up to 60 years.

What makes Ngamba Island truly special isn’t just the up-close encounters with these intelligent primates, but also the sanctuary’s deep commitment to conservation, education, and community involvement. Their work, in partnership with the Ugandan government and wildlife authorities, is vital for protecting chimpanzees in the wild.
