We are excited to have Diego back home in Galapagos!

This repatriation, the breeding, and rearing program of the species Chelonoidis hoodensis, from Española Island is closed, and today we celebrate this magnificent effort to preserve endemic species in Galapagos Islands.

The Directorate of the Galapagos National Park and its strategic partner Galapagos Conservancy, through the Giant Tortoise Restoration Initiative (GTRI), carried out the release of the original group of turtles reproductive adults of the Española Island. Thanks to this intervention, the giant tortoises went from 15 individuals to approximately 2300 turtles that now can be reproduced naturally on the island, saving the species from extinction and contributing to the restoration of the ecological integrity of the island. Furthermore meeting the necessary conditions to support the growing chelonian population in the long term.
