U.S. Route 54 (US 54) is a major east–west highway in the United States, spanning approximately 1,197 miles (1,926 km) from El Paso, Texas, to Griggsville, Illinois. The route traverses six states: Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois.
Beginning in El Paso, US 54 runs northeast through New Mexico, passing through cities like Alamogordo and Tucumcari. In Kansas, it serves as a significant east–west corridor, connecting towns such as Liberal, Pratt, and Wichita. The highway continues into Missouri, passing through Jefferson City, and eventually reaches its eastern terminus in Griggsville, Illinois.
Notably, the Union Pacific Railroad’s Tucumcari Line parallels US 54 from El Paso to Pratt, Kansas, covering about two-thirds of the route.
Throughout its course, US 54 varies between two-lane roads and four-lane divided highways, adapting to the regional transportation needs and traffic volumes.
