Georges Seurat was just 26 years old when "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884" made its first public appearance. "Bedlam," "scandal," and "hilarity" were among the epithets used to describe what is now considered his greatest work—first shown in Paris at the eighth Impressionist exhibition.

Seurat labored intensively for two years on the painting—a monumental composition over ten feet in length, painstakingly rendered in the pointillist style. Inspired by research in optical and color theory, he juxtaposed tiny dabs of colors that, through optical blending, form a single and, he believed, more brilliantly luminous hue.

This enormous work was only rarely seen in the three decades following Seurat's death in 1891 at the age of 31. Its visibility dramatically increased when the painting entered the Art Institute’s permanent collection in 1926.
