Want to ride a UTV near Glacier? Hungry Horse Reservoir is a solid scenic option with great views and some fun dirt-road riding.

The road follows the reservoir through Flathead National Forest with long gravel stretches, washboard, and some side roads with fun bumps and views. It is not technical, more of a rugged cruise.

A few quick tips:

• Cross Hungry Horse Dam and keep going along the reservoir before climbing up side roads
• Take spur roads away from the reservoir for the best views, including looking into the southern edge of Glacier National Park
• Expect some other traffic a few sections of the road, this is not a remote trail system, but you can easily escape up to some very quiet and more remote areas if you ask where to go at check-in.

Everyone waits for summer.

But winter in Glacier feels different. It’s faster in some ways, quieter in others, and honestly, a little more special. Snowmobiles carving through fresh powder ❄️, wide open trails, frozen lakes glowing in the light, and sunsets that feel like they’re just for you 🌅

There’s less noise, fewer crowds, and more space to actually take it all in.

Logan Pass parking full? Here’s what to do instead. 👀

This happens more often than most visitors expect. In summer, the Logan Pass lot can fill by mid-morning. If you arrive and don’t see any open spots, it’s usually better to keep moving instead of circling the lot.

There are a few great stops nearby that make easy backup plans along Going-to-the-Sun Road.

• 𝗦𝗶𝘆𝗲𝗵 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗱 — Just a couple of minutes east of Logan Pass. There’s usually easier parking here, and a short walk opens up beautiful valley views without the crowds at the visitor center. 🏔️

• 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 — A small pullout where the creek runs right beside the road. It’s a quick place to stop, stretch your legs, and take in the scenery before continuing your drive. 💧

• 𝗦𝘁. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 & 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 — About 20 minutes toward the east entrance. A short paved trail leads to two beautiful waterfalls, and it’s one of the most rewarding quick stops in the park. 🥾

Some of the best moments on Going-to-the-Sun Road happen at these smaller stops between the famous ones.

And if you’d rather spend the day enjoying the views than worrying about parking, exploring the road with a guided tour can make the whole experience much easier.

It’s one of the first things people ask before trying snowshoeing.

Snowshoes are built to spread your weight across the snow, which keeps you from sinking the way you would in regular boots. That’s why snowshoeing is one of the easiest winter activities for beginners and families visiting Montana.

A few practical things that make a first snowshoe hike easier:

• 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿 — usually just a few inches. That’s completely normal. Snowshoes prevent deep sinking, so you’re still walking comfortably on the snow.

• 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 — snowshoes are wider than regular boots, so a small adjustment in your stride keeps them from bumping into each other.

• 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 — walking where others have already packed the snow uses far less energy than breaking fresh powder.

• 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 — snowshoeing is easiest when you move at a relaxed, consistent pace and enjoy the scenery.

Winter in the Glacier brings some of the most peaceful moments, especially once you step onto the trail with snowshoes.

You don't have to be an expert hiker, but simply a short wander through quiet forests, snowy mountain trails, and wide open landscapes gives you a glimpse of the beauty of Glacier National park this time of year.

It is easier than most people expect, and it’s a far more immersive way to experience the landscape than simply viewing it from the road.

Planning to visit the Glacier area in March? It is quieter than summer and offers spectacular views in the West Glacier and Polebridge areas.

Here are a few things visitors still enjoy this time of year:

• Explore snowy forest trails on a snowshoe adventure near Apgar ❄️
• Head to nearby Whitefish for late-season skiing ⛷️ Our biggest storms are usually in March.
• Take in the peaceful views around Lake McDonald without the summer crowds 🏔️

March offers snowcapped peaks with longer hours of daylight and often some spectacular sunsets as the sunshine begins to reappear.
