The ocean was still a little wishy-washy early this morning. Southwest wind was fast asleep, so the water was greasy slick but bouncy. Water temp had just crept over 60°F about 10 miles out, and the black sea bass were feeding pretty good. Lots of really big schools of bait on the surface with no predators messing with them. Great crew, beautiful morning sprinkled with dolphins, patchy fog, and no wind. Happiest Easter to everyone!

Here’s some footage of the thresher shark we hooked today. Watch right at the end—you’ll see that very long, whip-like tail slice through the water and probably cut our line at the same time. We usually see these sharks between mid-March and mid-April. I’m quite sure they’re migrating somewhere… I just don’t know where to.

The wind was blowing just a tad too hard this morning, so we stuck to the 3-mile range. We located some really large schools of pinfish and juvenile bluefish. The water was only 54°F—cool and pea-soup murky green—but there were some big, hungry predators lurking in that green mess. We hooked a thresher shark. We always do this time of year, and only in one certain spot. The shark only realized it was hooked after it came to the surface, and of course that long tail whipped the line in half as it took off like an express train! The drum was 44 inches and took a Surelure jig with cut bait. Nice work, young lady! Great weather, wonderful company, and some smoking-hot spring fishing.

Today was a day brimming with firsts! This spirited young mate was celebrating his birthday when he hooked and landed the biggest fish of his life-a feisty 30 inch plus redrum. His younger sister reeled in her very first fish EVER on a fishing pole—what a thrill! It was a wonderful winter’s day for cruising the waters and casting lines, and we savored every moment. We even spotted an osprey, a rare sight this time of year—I’ve never seen one in January during my 22 years in Wilmington. Thanks again, my mighty fine mates, and hope to see you again soon! 🎣

Fall fishing is still firing on all cylinders! Today, we ventured about 9 miles off the beach and scored a mixed bag of bottom fish. We reeled in chunky black sea bass, lesser amberjack, flounder, bluefish, tautog, grunts, and a handful of other surprises too. Conditions were straight-up perfect: water temp at 9 miles hit 60°F, with air temps around 75°F. A south wind kicked up midway through, but it cranked the bite into overdrive! Bonus highlights? We spotted a lazy loggerhead turtle, massive schools of migrating sardines, and what we’re pretty sure was a large manta ray leaping ahead of us. Shoutout to my stellar crew—you crushed it! Wishing everyone an awesome weekend ahead. 🎣🐟

Yesterday hooked some massive drum—red drum, to be precise. But they weren’t red at all; they shimmered in the most magnificent golden hue, like treasures pulled straight from the deep.
It was one of those days when the sea dishes out life lessons with a salty edge. Right as we pulled away from the boat ramp, the north-northeast wind already howling, a hulking tugboat lumbered past like a gentle giant on its way out to sea. We barely made it two miles before the chop turned us around, and for the next 2½ hours, it was slim pickings: a few scraps, some feisty bluefish, a couple of sea bass. One of the kids was starting to feel seasick, so we called it. I turned to the three anglers still casting lines and said, “This is our Hail Mary. One last drop, then we’re done.”
Lo and behold, as the baits hit the bottom, the reels screamed to life. And there they were: enormous migrating red drum—or at least, that’s the name, but “red” doesn’t do them justice. These weren’t even the copper-tinged ones you sometimes see. No, these were pure gold, glowing under the sun like they’d been gilded by the gods of the tide.
The big takeaway? Never give up—not until the very last cast. That seasick kid toughed it out when we could’ve packed it in hours earlier, and boy, did we earn our reward. We lingered a bit longer, hooked a few more beauties, then flew home with the wind at our backs. What a wild, unforgettable ride.

This morning, we snuck out 6 miles offshore just as the south-southeast wind began to howl. Hitting that sweet spot, we dropped our lines—and boom, the black sea bass bite exploded! We loaded the cooler with a some nice hefty beauties in no time, but as the hours ticked by, the action fizzled under the shadow of that incoming cold front. This afternoon’s run delivered some epic battles with massive stingrays, cownose rays, and a smattering of quirky bycatch. What a glorious 78° scorcher—alas, it’ll be our last taste of warmth for a while. Who’s ready for the chill? ❄️🐟

It’s that time of the year. Four lucky police officers from the Wilmington Police Department put on their hats, and headed out on an all expense fishing, adventure.

For the last decade or so, I have had the honor to give back to this great community by taking the Wilmington Police Department officers on an all expense paid fishing trip. This year, like trips of the past I had the pleasure to get to know the men and women that dedicate their lives to serve and protect this community. We spent the day casting lines into the deep blue sea. Catching sea bass, trigger fish, blue fish, sharks, grunts, and flounder.

From the Feel Good Family to the WPD family—we appreciate your service from the bottom of our hearts and we’ll see you next year. ❤️
