WRIGHTSVILLE, N.C. – In just 24 hours, a video concept that is sweeping the world is sweeping through this popular beach community, the Wilmington, N.C., region and beyond. It’s the locally produced
“Happy” video (www.vimeo.com/96612830) from photographers Ned Leary and Will Page — which uniquely features Wrightsville Beach, N.C. — and it’s garnered more than 30,000 views on the Internet in
just one day.
“Happy” is sung by Pharrell Williams and originally appeared on the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack. Since its release, the song has created a buzz around the world with its catchy lyrics and upbeat message. The
innovative local video, which features the song as the backdrop, captures people around Wrightsville Beach who are enjoying life, whether it’s at the beach, the fish market, a restaurant or the grocery store.
“Wrightsville Beach is such a wonderful place to live that we decided it would be great to feature our hometown with a ‘Happy’ video,” said Ned Leary, founder of Ned Leary Photography (www.nedleary.com). “We were simply amazed by the incredible response in such a short period of time
— more than 30,000 views in 24 hours, and the numbers are still climbing.”
Leary, who specializes in landscape and portrait photography, and Page, who specializes in wedding and portrait photography and videography, saw the challenge of creating a video that features their hometown. Since they love creative challenges, they spent more than 65 hours over three weeks putting together the video. They shot more than 100 people, and then spent weeks editing, using time-lapse photography and drone footage. Individual response to the video has been overwhelming as well. Leary said he’s had people tell him the video brought tears to their eyes and reminded them why they live in Wrightsville Beach. In addition,
Leary said he’s had people say they used to live in the area, and the video makes them want to move back.
“Not only do we hope the video makes people ‘happy,’” Leary said, “but we hope it will bring people to Wrightsville Beach and the Wilmington area to vacation and live. It’s a great place to be, and we want to share that with the world.”
A quintessential “idea man,” Leary’s mind is always churning on ways to transform the normal into the extraordinary. In his earlier corporate life as R. J. Reynolds president of Sports Marketing Enterprises, he
was the creative mind behind national ad campaigns and NASCAR Winston Cup promotions. Since submitting to his passion for photography, particularly of the Wrightsville Beach area, creative
projects include “Called to Sea,” a photographic account of the lifecycle of loggerhead sea turtles; “44 Accesses,” extraordinary photography of otherwise ordinary entrances to Wrightsville Beach; and “The
Loop Dog” series of calendars. Leary frames his work in century-old Cape Fear River wood. Page, a Burlington, NC native, is a student at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington, where he studies business. His web site is www.willpagephoto.com.
