It was on a hot summer night like tonight in July over 145 years ago, James Heaton shot his lover Mary Radcliffe to death in the foyer of the grocery store/masonic hall that is now Slice of Life downtown. Mary was the daughter of a slave and a plantation owner. Heaton was the son of a prominent Senator and himself a radical figure in Wilmington politics and at one time, the City Clerk. After shooting Mary for leaving him, he ran from police. When cornered in a dead end alley, he turned the gun on himself. Their two bodies were laid out side by side in Mary's home for the coroner's inquest and the public to view. It is said the two spirits that died that night still haunt the old building on the corner of Market and 2nd Street. Sadly, Heaton's wealthy family placed a beautiful monolith stone to mark his grave in the New Bern cemetery where he is buried. Mary was buried in an unmarked grave in a cemetery that now lies beneath 17th Street, her resting spot lost to history. You can learn about the chilling paranormal occurrences surrounding this event when you visit this location with us on the pub crawl and raise a glass in honor of the short tragic life of Mary Radcliffe.

As we celebrate our 250th birthday as a country, we are proud of our Colonial and Revolutionary war history in Wilmington...and the ghosts it left behind. The "Rouse's Tavern Massacre" happened in 1781, when over 60 British soldiers and Loyalist under Major Craig surrounded the tavern in the middle of the night, trapping a group of sleeping Patriots shooting or bayoneting them in their sleep. About a dozen men were killed in their sleep. The location of the tavern was said to be around the Ogden area about 8 miles outside of downtown Wilmington. While the location is lost to history, the story of the revenge that came after has a haunting effect on downtown as it occurred at a tavern there. And it all starts with those seeking a dram of alcohol. Hear the story of one man's revenge for the massacre of his fellow patriot friends and the haunted stories associated with it on the Haunted Pub Crawl. Get your tickets at www.hauntedwilmington.com.
