One cold and foggy Christmas Eve in 1899, Captain Harper and his crew of the ship, “The Wilmington”, heard the screams for help.
The night was a miserable one and the good Captain and his crew veered off course to follow the sounds in hope of offering aid.
As they followed the sounds, they came upon what appeared to be a moss covered ghost ship with two Scottish Highlanders chained to the deck. As they approached to help, the ship pulled away, disappearing out of sight into the foggy night.
The crew was shaken by the encounter but continued down the Cape Fear following the screams they still heard.
Harper and the crew suddenly came upon a capsized cargo ship. The survivors clung to the ship or did their best to stay alive in the icy waters. The Wilmington had arrived just in time to save the survivors from the certain death that cold night of the Cape Fear river.
While the Highlanders had disappeared before the entire crews’ eyes, the crew knew now that those sailors from long ago, still haunting the waters of the Cape Fear, had led them to the Cargo ship and the men who faced drowning on that Christmas Eve night.
After rescuing the entire crew, Captain Harper and his crew retuened home to spend Christmas with families. They would never forgot about that errie encounter on that cold, foggy Christmas Eve 1899 on the Cape Fear.
Merry Christmas from the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington!
