Issyk-Kul is tectonic lake, approximately 25 million years old, formed by faults, folds and wraps in the earth’s surface. One of the legends says that many years ago there was a big and beautiful town at the location of Issyk-Kul. The town was buried and the lake formed after a strong earthquake. Legend states that before the earth-quake a number of young girls left town and went to the mountains to collect some firewood. And so, only those girls survived the earthquake that destroyed the town. Every morning they returned to the lake. They felt so sad and cried so much, that their tears dropped into the lake and made the water salty. The bitter sorrow and grief of those girls was later reflected in the name of the lake – “Issyk-Kul”. “Issyk” -hot(tears). Kyrgyz people believe that the nature of the lake is similar to the mood of the grieving women. When stormy, it’s silver-gray and roaring. The water of Issyk-Kul lake is very clear and transparent. As a result of aeration and movement, it is rich in oxygen.About 118 rivers and streams flow into the lake. It is fed by springs, including many hot springs, and snow melt. The lake has no current outlet, but some hydrologists hypothesize that, deep underground, lake water filters into the Chu River. The bottom of the lake contains the mineral monohydrocalcite: one of the few known lacustrine deposits.

Issyk-Kul -the ”Pearl of Kyrgyzstan”.It means “warm lake” in Kyrgyz language. It is an endorheic lake in the northern Tian Shan mountains in eastern Kyrgyzstan. It is the tenth largest lake in the world by volume , and the second largest saline lake after the Caspian Sea. Issyk-Kul Lake is 113 miles long, up to 37 miles wide, and its area is 2,408 sq miles. It is located an altitude of 5,272 ft, and reaches 2,192 ft in depth. Although it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, it never freezes.

We checked with the waiter twice...couldn't believe that all these delicious food (exclude alcoholic drink) in one of the restaurant near Bishkek was less then $10 !!!
