My First Trail of Tears Ride (Sep 21, 2019)
I came home last Wednesday from taking my friend to the doctor and was surprised to have my husband ask me if I wanted to ride the Trail of Tears on Saturday. He had ridden it many times when he lived out west, but not since he moved to NC. Of course, I said, SURE! That wouldn’t have been such a big deal if we didn’t live in eastern North Carolina, over 650 miles from the starting point in Bridgeport, Alabama.
We left home at 4am Friday morning and had a fairly uneventful trip to Nickajack Lake, at the base of the dam near Jasper, TN. We found our beautiful campground, Shellmound, on the shore of the lake. That evening we rode to Bridgeport to hear EXILE and to enjoy some great food.
We were up bright and early and got to the lineup at 7am. It amazed me that the state of Alabama shutdown 200 miles of 4 lane road so that thousands of bikers could participate in this 26th Annual Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride. Of course, this was only the Alabama portion of the trial, which started in the east and went all the Way to Fort Sill, OK.
Since my mother’s family were Cherokee from southeastern Oklahoma, I had been hearing about this tragic trek since I was a small child. It’s sad to think the US government forced thousands of Native American people off their lands to a strange area in Oklahoma. Sadly, 4,00 men, women, and children died on the Trail of Tears.
We arrived in Waterloo, AL about 5:00pm, after lunch at the Harley shop in Huntsville, AL. All along the route, we saw friendly faces, smiling and waving, and offering their blessing. Quite an event!
After a brief rest in Waterloo, we rode hard back to our campsite in Jasper, TN. It amounted to 400 miles (round trip) of hard riding. Ron did the hard part, I took care of the sightseeing and waving to the crowds. We stayed over Sunday and toured the area, heading back home Monday morning at a much more leisurely pace. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHERE MY HUSBAND TAKES ME THE NEXT TIME I LEAVE HIM “HOME ALONE” FOR A FEW HOURS.
