A Walk Through Time with Rock Cairns

Have you ever come across a stack of stones on a hike and wondered about its story? Throughout history, people all over the world—from tropics of Hawaii to the cold of Iceland—used these humble cairns to navigate harsh terrains. They weren’t just piles of rocks; they were lifesaving beacons, guiding travelers through mountains, deserts, and wilderness when the landscape offered no map.

Every cairn tells a story of human resilience, of finding direction in the vast unknown. When our research teams use these cairns to navigate, we also map it with our modern GPS equipment to create interactive maps, yet we imagine the footsteps that came before us—centuries of adventurers, herders, and wanderers trusting in these silent guides.
