Williams, Arizona, holds a special title in Route 66 history — the last town bypassed by I-40! The downtown mural proudly commemorates that moment in 1984 when the interstate changed the Mother Road forever, but Williams kept her spirit alive.

Lucille’s Roadhouse in Weatherford, Oklahoma is a charming homage to one of Route 66’s most cherished stops. Opened in 2006, this Route 66-themed restaurant has been delighting guests with breakfast, lunch, and dinner while offering a slice of history on the side.

The exterior pays nostalgic tribute to the original Lucille’s Historic Highway Gas Station in Hydro — with a porched front and vintage gas pumps reminiscent of the 1927 station operated by Lucille and Carl Hamons from 1941 until Lucille’s passing in 2000. Affectionately known as the “Mother of the Mother Road,” Lucille’s legacy lives on here in both spirit and decor.

Inside, a vibrant mural showcases a Route 66 shield, a map of the historic route, a photo of the original Lucille’s, and a whimsical cartoon of Lucille Hamons herself. The 1950s retro ambiance sets the scene for a wide-ranging menu of appetizers, soups and salads, sandwiches, entrees, grilled favorites, breakfast staples, and a selection of local b**rs.

In 2026, Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Established in 1926, the iconic Mother Road is in its Centennial year, and I want to bring that celebration to you. Every day throughout 2026, I’ll be showcasing a different Route 66 attraction that you won’t want to miss on your road trip.

Not every Route 66 landmark comes with sprinkles...but this one does. Soda Jerks Ice Cream Shop in Santa Monica has been serving up sundaes and scoops inside the 1916 Carousel Building since 2010. For travelers, it’s a great mix of old-fashioned charm and sweet reward after 2,448 miles on the Mother Road.

Find the Big Cowboy Boot roadside attraction in front of Grif’s Steakhouse in Shamrock, Texas on Route 66.

The location has deep roots — housed in a former CITGO station, Big Vern’s Steakhouse was once a Shamrock institution known for juicy steaks and tasty b**r bread. Inside, Texas-themed murals set the Western tone, while the giant red cowboy boot outside served as the centerpiece attraction. Sadly, the titular Big Vern passed away in 2019 and the steakhouse closed in 2020.

In 2023, Grif’s Steakhouse opened in the former Big Vern’s location, and the boot got a fresh coat of paint. Now black and brown, it features a painting of a cowboy and a Texas Route 66 shield — a fitting update for a new chapter on the Mother Road.
