Just west of the Colorado River, the Historic Route 66 California Gateway marks the point where the Mother Road enters the state. Located about two miles west of the river off Interstate 40 at the 5-Mile exit, this Bureau of Land Management site serves as both a day-use and picnic area and an interpretive stop along the Historic Route 66 National Scenic Byway.
The site includes two covered picnic tables, desert landscaping with native plants and trees, a wind gauge, and an information kiosk with background on Route 66 in the region. Small but worth a stop, the California Gateway offers travelers a chance to pause, learn, and take a break before continuing west through the Mojave Desert.
In 2026, Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Established in 1926, the iconic Mother Road is in its Centennial year, and I want to bring that celebration to you. Every day throughout 2026, I’ll be showcasing a different Route 66 attraction that you won’t want to miss on your road trip.
Add the Historic Route 66 California Gateway to your custom itinerary at Route 66 Road Map and come back tomorrow as we keep exploring more of the best stops on The Mother Road.
