The Queen On Main, LLC

The Queen On Main, LLC Premiere luxury Airbnb located in the heartbeat of downtown in a historic, 1895 Queen Anne Victorian. Elliott on October 2, 1889. She was 22 and James was 26.

The Queen on Main's Story
A Bygone Era

Hatti Elizabeth Dafoe married James L. Nine months later they had a son they named Charles; by October of that same year tragedy struck and just 3 months later, James was gone. Due to the laws of the state of California, the property transferred to their infant son- Women's Suffrage had not yet occurred in the state of California, (that didn't come until 191

1). Hatti was titled as "Guardian"on the deed. Some time after James' passing Hatti fell in love again and this time to David O'Rear Judy. They were wed November 6, 1894. The county records show that David immediately adopted young Charles and Hatti transferred ownership over to David. Within a year he built her the sweetest Queen Anne Victorian home around- fit for his "Queen". From what the records indicate, David owned Pioneer Livery Stable in town and later when horses weren't the mode of transportation, he converted the livery into a taxi service. Interested in local politics and civic affairs, a prominent citizen, he served on the town board for eighteen years. A census noted under "occupation" with regards to Hatti, she was an instructor of music. David passed in 1931 and Hatti just 7 years later. About that time, Mr. Ben Stephens, a local farmer, bought the home and retired. In the 1950's Mr. Yunker, purchased the home From Mr. Stephens. For around five years Mr. Yunker lived in the home with his aged mother. After that, he moved away and rented the home to a family with five children who lived there for fifteen years. Just about everyone who grew up in Winters during that era were friends with the children as the home seemed to be "Grand Central Station" for kids. Many locals recall playing in the home in their youth, attending slumber parties, birthday parties and playing many a yard game. In fact during a renovation of the yard evidence of such surfaced in the form of an old Hot Wheels and a Monopoly piece to which neighbor and local "Winterite" Brett Dunham happily laid claim, "So that's where that went!" he said as he related, with a wink, his fond childhood memories. In 1983 Mr. Yunker remodeled the home and moved back in. As Mr. Yunker's health failed with age years later, he was moved into convalescent care. The home was sold by his executor in 1995 to local ranchers, Michael and Rhonda Petrillo. The Petrillo's intention was to restore the home and open a Bed and Breakfast but their son fell ill with cancer and plans were put on hold. Their son survived but interests had shifted and the home became a rental. In 2020 the home was sitting vacant awaiting a second remodel to begin by the Petrillos. Then in August of that same year, the LNU Fire raged though the countryside of Solano county where the Petrillo's ranch was. In need of a safe place to be during the rebuilding of their ranch, the Petrillos found "The Queen" offered a peaceful place to reside. After a few months the Petrillos moved back onto the ranch and the remodel of The Queen On Main began soon thereafter. The construction industry was hit hard with supply chain issues and contractor's schedules were delayed due to Covid. The remodel took two years to complete and in January 2023 the Petrillos officially opened The Queen On Main as a short term vacation rental. The home has provided wonderful memories for many, many people since David and Hatti first built their dream cottage. Little did they know the delight it would bring to so many.

You're pulling plants out of your garden that you could be eating for dinner.

Lamb's quarters β€” the dusty-leaved w**d that shows up in disturbed beds from May onward β€” tastes like a milder, earthier spinach and cooks the same way. It grows faster than anything you planted on purpose, tolerates drought, and self-seeds so reliably that it comes back whether you want it to or not.

Purslane β€” the flat, fleshy-stemmed w**d most people scrape off walkway cracks β€” has a lemony crunch that works raw in salads or lightly sautΓ©ed. It's one of the few leafy greens with meaningful omega-3 content, and it thrives in the hot, dry gaps between garden rows where nothing else wants to grow.

Dandelion greens are best eaten young, before the plant flowers, when the leaves are tender and only slightly bitter. The whole plant is usable β€” leaves in salads, flowers as fritters, roots dried and roasted as a caffeine-free coffee substitute. French and Italian markets sell cultivated dandelion varieties because they never stopped treating it as food.

Chickw**d β€” the soft groundcover that fills cool-season beds β€” is mild enough to eat raw by the handful. It thrives in the cold, moist window before warm crops take over, filling a harvest gap most gardeners leave empty.

🌿 How to start eating what's already growing:

- Harvest lamb's quarters and dandelion greens young β€” before flowering, when leaves are tender and mild

- Pick purslane stems whole and rinse well β€” it grows flat against soil so it needs a good wash

- Add chickw**d to salads raw β€” it wilts fast after picking so eat it the same day

- Learn one w**d at a time and confirm ID before eating β€” a good field guide or your local extension office can help with the first few

The best salad in your garden is the one you've been composting 🌱

Did you know this? I didn't.
Why do I include information on plants and gardening on my historical Airbnb page? Victorians were huge on gardening. We have forgotten much of what they practiced.
You're welcome! πŸ₯°
Saw this online:

"You repotted into a bigger container because the plant looked cramped. Three weeks later the leaves turned yellow and the stems went soft."
Sound familiar?
It most likely was due to pot size and too much soil. "Too much soil?" you say?
You gave it more soil than its roots could use.

"A plant moved from a four-inch pot to a twelve-inch pot isn't getting room to grow. It's sitting in a wide ring of wet soil that its root system can't reach or dry out. That moisture sits for days or weeks with no roots to absorb it β€” and roots that stay in waterlogged soil stop functioning."

Rule of thumb for transplanting: Go up one to two inches in diameter. A four-inch pot moves to a six. A six to an eight. The new soil volume dries at roughly the same rate the existing roots can handle, and the whole pot stays in the healthy wet-dry cycle that roots depend on.

Helpful hint: The pot that looks too small is usually the right sized one.

⚘️Three details that matter as much as size:

πŸͺ΄ Soil line β€” match the original exactly. Burying the stem deeper than it sat in the previous pot puts the crown junction in wet soil, where it rots. Same line, same height, no deeper!

πŸͺ΄Pot shape β€” tall narrow pots hold water longer at the bottom than wide shallow pots with the same volume. Herbs, succulents, and shallow-rooted tropicals do better in squat, wide containers where the soil dries more evenly

πŸͺ΄When to repot β€” when roots are circling the inside wall or pushing through drainage holes. A root-bound plant looks stressed but recovers quickly once moved up one size. There's no rush β€” a slightly cramped plant is in far less danger than an over-potted one

Homemade plant food can be fun to try, but I always keep it simple and use it gently until I see how the plants respond 🌼
πŸ«™ I treat homemade mixes more like a boost than a full feeding plan
πŸ’§ Diluting well is the part I never skip
🌱 I usually test any new mix on one or two plants first
πŸͺ΄ For me, less is better than too much with DIY feeds
Simple and mild usually works best.
