Can you get TOO MUCH AIRPORT as a kid? I think you can. At least, if “the airport” means debugging airplanes, degreasing the belly, and doing other not so fun airport stuff. I think I got too much and I think my kids did. But, if you fast forward 10 (me) or 14 (him) years, it seems that you eventually get rid of all those bad airport memories and find that it’s in your blood and that you want to become a pilot. That’s what happened with me, and now with Raefe.

After a 14 year hiatus from soloing on his 16th birthday, he finally got back into aviation and got his Private Pilot license. He has ambitions to rapidly add on ratings so we will see where this goes. Have fun and be safe and enjoy your newfound wings. Congratulations Raefe! Great job!

Congratulations to Sydney Swartz on earning her Commercial Pilot Certificate. She got her Private, Instrument, and now Commercial, and all before her next accomplishment, graduating from high school in two weeks. Sydney is currently a Senior at Antigo High School.

TONIGHT at 7:00 at the Terminal Building

In continuing our Pilot training seminars, our next one will be Thursday April 10 at 7:00pm at the Wisconsin Rapids airport will be “Can YOU Get through a Private Pilot Oral?”

You will be part of all of the aspects of the ground portion of a Private Pilot checkride. You will be able to see if you have the “Right Stuff” to pass this portion of the checkride (or if you need to study more). Take this opportunity to spend a few hours with a Designated Pilot Examiner to see where you are at with your knowledge base.

The attached images show what you should have prepared before you show up for the real thing. Use it as you wish depending on what stage you are in your training. No matter where you are at, if you plan to be a Private Pilot, this will be a great session to help you know what it takes to get there.

This one’s a hard pill for a lot of people to swallow: being certified doesn’t always mean you’re qualified — and William Dubois lays that bare.

There’s a clear lesson here for both pilots and CFIs:
- Pilots hiring instructors: Ask the right questions. Total time doesn’t matter much if they have zero in make and model. Taildraggers like the Maule can be twitchy on rollout — especially on narrow strips — and that’s not the time to be teaching from a cold start.
- CFIs taking gigs: If you don’t know the airplane, don’t touch it until you do. Not every dollar is worth it. And yes, it’s legal to instruct without time in type for singles. But legal ≠ smart.

Also, the “he was flying / no, he was flying” routine? That just screams lack of a positive transfer of controls — a basic safety protocol. Not having clarity on who’s flying the airplane is how bad landings turn into bent metal and FAA paperwork.

Honestly, this whole thing could’ve been avoided with just a little more due diligence from both sides.

Our next session will be the Private Pilot checkride mock oral. We will go through a mock oral and cover everything in a typical checkride from showing up at the airport to walking out to get in the airplane for the flight portion. We will use the ACS in conjunction with the oral.
