In Summer of 2006, I organized a conference for Buddhist Studies scholars held at Than Hsiang Temple in my birthplace Penang, Malaysia. Before the conference started, about two handfuls of my academic mentors and their colleagues came earlier so that they could experience the local religious culture of Malaysian Chinese.

Here, they are attending a consultation session with the popular Chinese deity known as Master Ji (Ji Gong). Master Ji takes possession of his medium at this temple in the Air Itam area in Penang. Other than local devotees consulting the deity through the medium, a couple of my guests (one is my mentor in Buddhist Studies, expert in Tiantai Buddhism and the other my friend, a scholar in Sinhala Theravada) both also consulted the deity.

In 2006, I took a group of students from Warren Wilson College, North Carolina to Central Tibet for 3 weeks. Back then, Lhasa was very different from what it is now. You could still catch glimpses of "old Tibet" back then. Grateful that I was able to go to Central Tibet 3-4 more times where the sights and smells of "old Tibet" were still possible to catch.
