From the road Jacksonboro looks like any other quiet Lowcountry stretch. A few trees. A bend in the highway. But if you look past the trees you can imagine a thriving colonial town that once stood here.

In 1782 the South Carolina General Assembly gathered in Jacksonboro. Charleston had fallen to the British and this quiet stretch of the Lowcountry became the provisional capital of the state.

Look closer and you will find the remains of the Pon Pon Chapel of Ease, standing where a colonial thoroughfare once ran. And Isaac Hayne, condemned as a traitor by the British and executed in Charleston in 1781, still rests in the gardens where he was born and where he asked to be laid to rest.

Most people keep driving. The ones who stop leave knowing something they didn't before.

The SC Lowcountry's Wildlife Management Areas and National Wildlife Refuges don't ask much of you. All you have to do is show up.

Spend a misty morning watching wading birds work the shallows. Follow a trail into a bottomland hardwood forest and see what finds you. Bring a kayak, a camera, a bike, or just your own two feet. These wild, accessible places are unhurried and full of more than you came looking for.

The wait is almost over.

The Hunting Island Lighthouse is set to reopen on May 26th. Every one of those 167 steps will be worth taking, and that view at the top has been waiting long enough.

Mark your calendars. This climb is worth it.

Somewhere between "are we there yet" and "we should do this every trip" is Sergeant Jasper Park in Hardeeville.

Pack the family in the car and make the stop. Walk a trail and see what birds are hanging around. Get out on the water in a kayak. Cast a line. Throw a disc. Let the kids loose on the playground while you remember what it feels like to not be in a hurry.

It's the kind of stop that turns a long drive into a great memory.

The SC Lowcountry has never been short on water. Freshwater rivers, brackish tidal creeks, wide open marshes, it's all here and it's all yours.

Whether you're launching a kayak at first light, cruising the waterways with nowhere in particular to be, or casting a line and letting the current decide the rest of the day, the water has a way of handling everything else for you.

All you have to do is get out on it.
