Tashkent Soviet Architecture Tour - link in comments 👇

Tashkent's Soviet architecture is a remarkable reflection of the city's transformation during the 20th century, as it became the capital of Soviet Uzbekistan and a showcase of the "Soviet Orient."

Following the 1966 earthquake that devastated much of the city, Tashkent was rapidly rebuilt with the help of workers from across the USSR, creating a unique blend of modernist architecture that incorporated both socialist ideals and Central Asian traditions.

Tashkent became a hub for social and urban experimentation, featuring avant-garde designs and serving as a model of Soviet innovation and multiculturalism during the 'Thaw' period.

The city's modernist architecture includes iconic buildings and spaces that highlight its role as the Soviet gateway to Asia.

Kokaldash Madrasah in Tashkent is one of the few historical buildings remaining in Tashkent after the earthquake in 1966.

Originally built in 1570, it’s been rebuilt since then but managed to survive the most recent earthquake in modern day history which destroyed much of Tashkent’s important architecture.

The madrasah is an active one today with students studying there and a small craft shop on the 2nd floor.

It’s one of the prettiest monuments in Tashkent and you can visit it today for 15,000 som which is about $1.

One of my favourite places in Samarkand is the Bibi-Khanym Mosque. The mosque was very badly damaged in an earthquake in 1897 but has been rebuilt since then.

There are many legends connected to this huge mosque but my favourite is the idea that crawling under the marble Quran stand helps to improve fertility.

Now I'm not exactly a superstitious person but my wife and I did visit there a few years ago. She certainly didn't crawl under but a couple of years later we added a new member to the TourCentralAsia team...

Unfortunately, the stand is now protected behind a glass cage so the practise of crawling under has now come to an end. Only time will tell if the birth rate of children in Samarkand is affected...

One of my favorite Uzbek foods are samosa, known locally as somsa. Baked in a clay oven called a tandir, they’re a perfect snack and best eaten hot.

They’re usually filled with mutton or beef but you can also get vegetable somsa with either pumpkin, potato or spinach.

Once in a blue moon I manage to get a chicken somsa before they sell out.

They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes but are usually triangular.

There’s one region of Uzbekistan famous for its large size somsa but I can’t remember where! Is it Karakalpakstan??
