The Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan

The Astronomical Institute (AI) of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan is the oldest scientific institution not only in Uzbekistan, but also in Central Asia as a whole. It was founded as the Tashkent Astronomical Observatory in 1873 and reorganized into the AI in 1966. It was known as an important astrometric center of the former Soviet Union. The photographic database obtained by the Kitab double astrograph, Carl Zeiss and the Normal Astrograph, established in Tashkent in 1895 and replenished up to the mid-1980s, is unique and one of the richest in the world. Since the end of the 19th century, AI has been included in the International Latitude Service. The Kitab-AI station was one of the five stations of the ILS network. Today, the ground station of the satellite GPS navigation system is located in Kitab (Maidanak).
Currently, the studies performed in the AI are mainly based on observational data obtained at the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory, located 120 km south of the famous historical city of Samarkand. The observatory is located on the western spurs of the Pamir-Alai mountain system at an altitude of 2700 meters above sea level. Observatory Maidanak is unique in its high-quality atmospheric conditions and geographical location - in the middle between the main astronomical observatories in the Canaries and Hawaii. This makes Maidanak a very important point for the continuous control of astrophysical objects.

Ak-Saray Palace, Shakhrisabz city, Kashkadarya region

Ak-Saray Palace is translated from the Uzbek language as a "white palace", it is the grandiose ruined residence of Timur in his home town of Shakhrisabz. Its construction began in 1380, construction work continued for 24 years, almost until the death of the conqueror. The palace included several courtyards around which there were living quarters and public rooms. The premises were decorated with golden azure, the facades of the buildings are covered with colored tiles, the courtyards are paved with white slabs.
One of the wonders of the palace was a swimming pool on the roof, from which flowed a picturesque cascade of jets. Water in the basin came through a lead trough from the mountain pass Takhtakarach. The arch of the entrance portal of Ak-Sarai, which collapsed about 300 years ago, was the largest in Central Asia. Now a days, only two disconnected pylons have survived from this magnificent structure.
The palace occupied a large area: only one main courtyard was 120-125 m in width and 240-250 m in length. Calculation of the proportions of the surviving elements of the building shows that the height of the main portal reached 70 meters. Along with other monuments of Kesh in the Timurid era, the palace is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mausoleum of Abu Mansur Maturudiy, Samarkand

Abu Mansur Muhammad al-Hanafiy al-Maturidi al-Samarkandi - a theological scholar and philosopher, the founder of the school "Maturidiya" in kalam (theosophy), a connoisseur of fiqh (Muslim jurisprudence) - was born in 870 near Samarkand in Maturidh. Education was first in a rural school, and then continued in a madrasah.
Students were flocking to him in a multitude, and Imam al-Maturidi taught them in the garden at his home. His influence in the scholarly world of the Muslim East was very great. The most famous of his followers was Abul-Muin Nasafi (11th century), who continued the teaching of "Maturidia".
Imam Abu Mansour al-Maturidi died in 944 and was buried in Samarkand at the Chokaradiz cemetery (Chakar-Dizah), where a mausoleum was built, which was widely respected by the population. According to legend, more than 3,000 scholar-theologians were buried in this cemetery. The mausoleum was destroyed in the 30th century of the 20th century.
