Monday Blues... Look at this adorable little hawksbill turtle. Did you know that when hawksbill hatchlings leave St. Croix, they spend several years out in the open sea hidden in the sargassum? (While we all hate the sargassum, it is important habitat for marine life.) Then, when they are a bit bigger, they move to nearshore waters, where they start becoming part of the coral reef ecosystem. They will spend several years in residence, crunching on sponges before moving on to their nesting grounds.

On our way ❤️ Critically Endangered hawksbill hatchlings make their way to the sea at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. St. Croix is an incredibly important nesting ground for this species in the Caribbean, with nearly 1,000 nests recorded each year all around the island.

Now that's a number! We are just getting rolling in our busiest part of the nesting season but our turtle team (including all our volunteers) have recorded 999 nests for all three sea turtle species nesting on St. Croix!

Green turtles are really starting to roll in! We are now recording a couple dozen green turtle crawls each morning across St. Croix. There will be many more to come - in August and September we will record ~200 green turtle crawls PER DAY!

We may be headed for a record year of 5,000+ nests on St. Croix alone. Watch our website STXTurtles.com to see our numbers climb ❤️
