An epic 2-Day DWS Adventure in Lan Ha Bay

It has long been a dream of mine to revisit and explore the farther, less-climbed corners of Lan Ha Bay. Between a rare tidal window and a bunch of friends willing to follow me into questionable levels of remoteness, it finally happened 😄

Day 1: Revisiting ‘Hon Dua’ & Exploring ‘Unemployment Wall’

On this day, we sailed further into the open sea to lay our hands (and feet) on these magnificent limestone giants.

Hon Dua is a 35-metre freestanding pillar rising straight from the seabed—arguably the most iconic rock in Lan Ha Bay.

Unemployment Wall, on the other hand, is huge, steep, and covered in outrageous tufas. Some of the most surreal climbing Vietnam has to offer!

The journey was long and rough. The walls steep and exposed. The winds strong, the sea choppy beneath. Definitely not for the faint of heart (and stomach)…

Out here, your vision becomes sharper, movements more precise, and focus absolute. Body and mind are forced to live entirely in the present moment. Novelty, uncertainty, a touch of fear, and pure excitement all rolled into one. And when it’s over, a deep sense of achievement remains. It was one of the most intense and memorable experiences I’ve had.

A special thanks to .bittner for sharing this journey with me. Nothing beats the joy of exploring unfamiliar vertical terrain and goofing around with friends. 👊

Stay tuned for Day 2 😉

Tiger Beach, just opposite Moody Beach, may be Lan Ha Bay’s best sand beach and offers a great mix of single-pitch and multi-pitch routes.

To the right, « Offenheimer’s Creation » sector is home to 10 single-pitch routes from 5b to 7b, while to the left, « Slo Pony Wall » boasts a famous 72m 4-pitch route (6a+) with a jaw-dropping view over Lan Ha Bay, plus a couple of harder single-pitch climbs (7b-7c).

Compared to Moody Beach, Tiger Beach is more challenging but also guarantees more adventure, and can satisfy both beginners and experienced climbers alike.

Introducing “Moody Beach” aka “Climbing in Paradise” crag… 30 mins from Cat Ba by boat through a maze of limestone formations of Lan Ha Bay, a small secluded beach slowly reveals itself… With 5 routes ranging from 4+ to 6a plus one overhang 6b+ with stunning views, it’s the perfect spot for top-rope climbing or practicing leading, AND chilling on the beach 🏖️

“Screw Loose” - An exciting 4-pitch 72m climb with breathtaking views of Lan Ha Bay. You start off climbing up a cave, then navigate a narrow exit via a long thin stalactite to reveal a stunning panorama of Tiger Beach's golden shoreline and the vast turquoise ocean... A must-do when you’re in Catba!
