Locals, known as forest managers, live in and protect the mangrove forest in Can Gio. We offer tours that allow you to experience their daily lives. Below you can see a group of visitors as they take part in traditional methods of night fishing.

In the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve we work toghether with local people to protect the environment. Every month we host an event to educate them about environmental issues. In the pictures below you can see some of the local women learning about the problems of climate change and presenting their solutions.

In the Dan Xay Mangrove Park there are six sample areas for research on biodiverstiy. In these samples each tree has been asigned a number and its species as well as measurements have been noted down. Last week we started maping their distribution on top of that. Once we have collected all data we plan to set up information boards for public display.

Can Gio's coastline is composed of sandy beaches and rocky shores. A day can be easily spent following it for a while between Monkey Island and Can Thanh town. Many small restaurants and bars offer refreshment along the way.

No plans for the weekend? Come and visit us at the Dan Xay Mangrove Park. Beautiful nature, good food and exciting activities await you. If you are in for an adventure you can explore the mangrove forest by kayak or you can simply take a stroll through the shady paths of the park. There is something to do for everyone.

Every year from the 15th-17th of August in the lunar calender the "Welcome the Whales festival" is celebrated in Can Thanh town. The whale-worship is a special tradition from coastal communities in Viet Nam, for the protection of the fishermen. This year the festival started on sunday the 27th of September. Cultural activities like games and prayers set up the atmosphere for the big procession on monday. On the photos below you can get an impression of the dressed-up people and decorated boats.
