HUNGRY? HUNGRY? Hahahaaa 😂😂😂
My beautiful tourists ask Toby guide:
“Toby, what is special about your Mekong tour?”
I always have the same answer:
“First… we eat!” 😂
A hot bowl of bún riêu.
A hot bowl of hủ tiếu.
Sitting on a little boat, watching the sun come up over the floating market.
Then we talk.
We talk about the river.
About the boats.
About the farmers.
About the fruit.
About the daily life of people here.
But actually… I don't need to explain the Mekong too much.
Because the Mekong raised me. ❤️
I was born in Kiên Giang and grew up as a Mekong countryside boy.
When I was a kid, I listened to my mother's lullabies.
I swam in the river.
I went to the rice fields.
I caught fish and snails.
Sometimes I caught something.
Sometimes… nothing. 😂
I went to school on a simple old bicycle.
No fancy toys. No fancy life.
But I had something very rich:
my family, my neighbours, my village and the river.
People knew each other.
Someone had coconuts, someone had bananas.
Someone caught fish and shared them with the neighbours.
That was my beautiful childhood.
And somehow, that little Mekong boy grew up and decided:
“Okay… I want to study Tourism.” 😄
So I worked hard and entered Can Tho University.
And look at me now…
17 years later, I am still on the river! 😂
Same Mekong.
Same floating market.
Same local food.
Only Toby has a little more grey hair now. Hahahaaa! 🤣
Every morning, when I take my guests onto the river before sunrise, I sometimes look around and think:
“This is my childhood… and now I am sharing it with people from all over the world.”
That feeling is difficult to explain.
I don't take you to the Mekong just because it is my job.
I take you there because this is home.
I want you to see the Mekong before the day gets busy.
Eat what local people eat.
Go through the little canals.
Meet ordinary people.
Feel the river.
Laugh a little.
Get hungry again. 😂
And maybe, after a few hours together, you will understand why I love this place so much.
I am just a local guy from the Mekong.
But I am very, very lucky.
Lucky to be born here.
Lucky to grow up here.
Lucky to become a guide here.
And lucky to meet friends from around the world here.
