Happy Liberation Day & International Labour Day in Vietnam

Vietnam feels especially alive during Liberation Day on April 30 and International Labour Day on May 1. Red flags dance above the streets, music rises through the warm air, and every corner carries a sense of pride that you can almost touch. In the cities, the atmosphere is vibrant and electric. In smaller towns, the celebrations feel heartfelt and deeply rooted, where family gatherings, local food, and moments of remembrance come together in a beautiful rhythm.

This holiday season reveals a side of Vietnam that stays with you. It is the glow of evening lights on busy streets, the sound of laughter spilling from cafes, and the powerful spirit of a nation honoring its history while embracing the present.

Celebrate these meaningful days with Up Travel Vietnam.

[Cao Bang Deserves Its Own Chapter in Vietnam's Story]

Vietnam has no shortage of famous names. Travelers know Ha Long Bay, Hoi An Ancient Town, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and the Complex of Hue Monuments. These UNESCO-recognized places have earned their spotlight. But far to the north, near the border with China, Cao Bang, Vietnam deserves far more attention than it usually gets.

This is a province of limestone mountains, jade rivers, remote ethnic minority villages, and one of the country’s most spectacular waterfalls: Ban Gioc. It feels bigger, quieter, and more elemental than many better-known destinations.

If you are planning a Vietnam trip and want to go beyond the standard route, Cao Bang is the kind of place that can reshape your understanding of the country.

𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥𝗦 🧥

The weather in Cao Bang rarely stays the same from breakfast to dinner. The unique geography creates distinct microclimates in every valley. You might wake up shivering under a thick blanket, only to find yourself sweating just three hours later.

When the sun drops behind the limestone peaks in the late afternoon, the temperature plummets instantly. The damp air rising from the rivers makes the cool evenings feel much sharper than a dry cold.

The secret to staying comfortable is keeping a lightweight fleece or windbreaker at the very top of your daypack. You want to be able to add or remove a layer without digging through all your belongings. Proper layering ensures you never miss a sunset view because you are too cold to stand outside.

Save this post and use it as a reference when packing your day bag for the mountains!

Cao Bang does not look the same in October as it does in January. The season you choose determines the color of the rice terraces, the roar of the waterfalls, the thickness of the mist clinging to the limestone, and even the temperature of the air on your face as you ride. Knowing the difference helps you plan a trip that matches what you actually want to experience.

Autumn, from September through November, is widely considered the most rewarding time to visit. The rice terraces turn from deep green to gold, the skies clear after the wet season, and the air settles into a crisp, comfortable coolness. Ban Gioc Waterfall runs at a strong, full flow during this period, and the light on the karst peaks in the early morning is the kind that makes photographers stop mid-sentence. Temperatures sit between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, ideal for long days on the road.

Winter, from December through February, brings a completely different atmosphere. Fog rolls through the valleys before sunrise, frost appears on the higher passes, and the landscape takes on a quieter, more contemplative mood. The cold is real, dropping to 3 or 4 degrees at altitude, so warm layers are essential. But the reward is a Cao Bang that feels almost entirely your own. Crowds thin out, the charcoal fires inside family kitchens burn warm, and the pace of life in the villages slows to something deeply peaceful.

Spring, from March to April, brings blooming wildflowers along the roadsides and fresh green growth across the hillsides. Summer, from June to August, fills the waterfalls to their most dramatic, but mountain roads can be slippery and landslides are possible in heavy rain. If you are a first-time visitor, aim for October or November. You will not regret it.

Save this post so you can match your travel dates to the experience you are looking for.

𝗔 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗘𝗙𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗚𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗔𝗬 🗣️

Vietnamese is the official language, but up here in the mountains, you will hear a completely different melody. The Tay and Nung ethnic groups have their own distinct languages and dialects.

While locals always appreciate a friendly Vietnamese "Xin Chào" (Hello), speaking a few words in their native tongue completely changes the dynamic of your interactions. It shows a deep level of respect for their specific heritage.

Interestingly, the Tay and Nung people rarely use a direct, literal translation for "hello." Instead, they greet each other by wishing wellness or asking about their day. Next time you stay at a local homestay or buy fruit from a vendor, try greeting them formally with "Pưa đảy nơ" (wishing you well) or saying "Pjòm bái" to say thank you.

Taking the time to learn these small phrases will almost always reward you with a surprised and brilliant smile.

Do you try to learn a few words of the local language before you visit a new country? 🌍

𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗨𝗣 🥾

We love seeing our guests dress up for photos, but the terrain in Cao Bang demands a practical approach to footwear. The landscapes here are defined by karst limestone.

Limestone is beautiful to look at, but it gets incredibly slick when wet. Whether you are stepping onto a bamboo raft at the waterfalls, navigating the damp stone steps inside Nguom Ngao cave, or walking through the morning dew in a Tay village, traction is your best friend.

You do not necessarily need heavy, professional mountaineering boots. A pair of trail running shoes or comfortable walking shoes with a deep, grippy tread will work perfectly. Save your pristine white sneakers for the cafes in Hanoi.

Question: Are you a heavy packer who brings multiple pairs of shoes, or do you try to travel with just one versatile pair? 🎒
Soft CTA: We send out a comprehensive packing guide before every trip to ensure you arrive comfortable and prepared for the terrain.

𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗗𝗘 🗓️

If you want to experience the true pulse of the northern highlands, you need to visit a "Phiên" market. These are not everyday shopping centers. They are vibrant, chaotic, and beautiful community gatherings where locals trade cattle, buy farming tools, and catch up with neighbors over bowls of hot noodles.

Catching one requires a bit of planning because they do not follow the standard Monday to Sunday week. Instead, they follow specific days on the lunar calendar. For example, the famous Tra Linh market only happens on days ending in 4 or 9 of the lunar month.

If you arrive on the wrong day, you will just find an empty dirt lot. If you arrive on the right day, you will find a sensory explosion of color, sound, and smell.

Tell us your travel dates, and our team will calculate the lunar calendar to ensure your itinerary includes a bustling highland market.

𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 🚣

There is a specific feeling you get when you paddle out into the middle of Ba Be Lake. The cliffs tower over you, covered in tangled primary rainforest that looks exactly as it did thousands of years ago.

The lake is actually three lakes connected (Ba Be means "Three Lakes"), and the water is calm, making it perfect for kayaking even if you are a beginner. As you drift along the Nang River, keep your eyes on the treeline—you might spot a macaque jumping between branches or a kingfisher diving for lunch.

It is a moment of pure connection with nature. No engine noise. No notifications. Just the sound of your paddle breaking the surface of the water.

Our 3D2N tour includes a boat trip, but we can add kayaking for those who want to get closer to the water.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇 🧵

If you look closely at the traditional clothing of the Nung women in Cao Bang, you will notice a deep, mesmerizing shade of blue. This isn't chemical dye; it is a labor of love that connects the people to the land.

We can take you to villages where this craft is still practiced. Just ask us to customize your route.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗨𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 🪨

In the borderlands of Trung Khanh, the houses don't just sit on the land; they seem to grow out of it. Welcome to Khuoi Ky, the "Stone Village" where distinct architecture meets a fierce history.

Centuries ago, to protect themselves against bandits and invaders from the north, the Nung people began building their homes entirely from limestone. They didn't use mortar or cement. Instead, they painstakingly stacked thousands of rough stones, fitting them together like a giant puzzle to create walls nearly a meter thick.

Walking through the village today feels like stepping into a medieval time capsule. The stone walls are cool to the touch, often covered in patches of green moss. These structures are "stilt houses" in shape, but fortresses in spirit—solid, stoic, and built to withstand anything the seasons (or history) throw at them.

Khuoi Ky is located right near Ban Gioc Waterfall. We can arrange a walk through this living museum on your next tour.

𝗨𝗡𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝟯𝗗𝟮𝗡 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 🚐

Why choose between the mountains and the water when you can have both? Our signature "𝟯𝗗𝟮𝗡 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲" is designed to connect the two wildest landscapes in Northern Vietnam: The limestone kingdom of Cao Bang and the prehistoric jungles of Ba Be National Park.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭: 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 & 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲
We leave Hanoi early, heading straight for the borderlands. We don’t just drive; we walk through history. You will stand on the ramparts of the 16th-century Mac Citadel, overlooking the valley, before paying respects at the D**g Khe battle site. The night ends not in a hotel, but in a traditional Nung homestay, sharing a home-cooked dinner and stories with your hosts.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀
This is the day of heavy hitters. You will feel the spray of Ban Gioc Waterfall (spanning 300m across the border) and descend into the "Tiger Cave" of Nguom Ngao. Then, we trade the stone mountains for the "Snake Pass," winding our way down to Ba Be Lake for a night in a Tay stilt house.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲
up to the sound of gibbons. We board a boat to cross Ba Be Lake, hiking through ancient rainforests to visit a 500-million-year-old cave and the sacred An Ma Temple. Whether you choose to kayak, swim in the cool water, or just drift past Widow Island, it is the perfect decompression before the drive back to Hanoi.

This is a small-group tour by Limousine Van. We handle every ticket, meal, and transfer. Send us a message to grab a seat for next week.
