DANANG CITY TOUR (Visit Marble Mountain & Cham Museum)

Danang is one of the five largest cities in Vietnam including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, and Cần Thơ in terms of urbanization and economy.Located on the coast of the South China Sea at the mouth of the Han River, it is one of Vietnam’s most important port cities. As one of the country’s five direct-controlled municipalities, it is under the direct administration of the central government.

Danang is the commercial and educational centre of Central Vietnam, as well as being the largest city in the region. In addition to its well-sheltered, easily accessible port, Danang’s location on the path of National Route 1A and the North–South Railway makes it a hub for transportation. It is located within 100 km (62 mi) of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Imperial City of Hue, the Old Town of Hoian, and the Myson ruins. The city was previously known as Cửa Hàn during early Đại Việt settlement, and as Tourane (or Turon) during French colonial rule. Before 1997, the city was part of Quang Nam-Danang Province.

On 1 January 1997, Danang was separated from Quảng Nam Province to become one of four independent (centrally controlled) municipalities in Vietnam. Danang is listed as a first class city, and has a higher urbanization ratio than any of Vietnam’s other provinces or centrally governed cities.

DANANG CITY TOUR ITINERARY

Climb Thuy Son (Water) by the stone stairs and enjoy the panoramic view of the nearby countryside, and visit Huyen Khong cave before entering Tam Thai and Linh Ung pagoda. Rest at the foot of the mountain, where you can visit Non Nuoc stone village, where the local skilful sculptors create many marble products which are exported to many countries worldwide. On the way back to Danang city, visit the Cham museum – Vietnam’s fourth largest city, Danang, houses the world’s finest collection of Cham sculpture. The Cham Museum was founded in 1915 by the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient, this place worth visiting are the statues, which date from the 7th to 15th centuries, masterful carvers; their religious statues are by turns serene, playful and sensual.

MYSON SANCTUARY

Myson is a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Hindu temples in Vietnam, constructed between the 4th and the 14th century AD by the kings of Champa (Chiêm Thành in Vietnamese).The temples are dedicated to the worship of the god Shiva, known under various local names, the most important of which is Bhadreshvara.

Between the 4th and 13th centuries a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Viet Nam. This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence.

Myson is the former capital of the Kingdom of Champa and the site of Vietnam’s most important Cham ruins. Your day will begin with an early morning drive from Danang city or Hoian city through 60 km of rolling countryside, passing through small towns with markets. The towers there date from the 9th through the 13th century. There were over 70 classic Cham monuments at Myson. Most of the temples in Myson were dedicated to Cham Kings and also served as a burial place for Cham monarchs. It is considered on the level of Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Myanmar, and Ayuthaya in Thailand.

MYSON TOUR ITINERARY

9:10am Arrive at Myson Holy land, located 60 km from Hoian city, Myson is considered to be one of the best-preserved Cham sites in Vietnam. Strategically located in a lush valley surrounded by towering mountains, the site of Myson was continually inhabited for 900 years, longer than any of the other sites of the great idealized civilizations of South East Asia.

During the 4th century, it became the religious, cultural and educational center of the Cham Empire. Most of the temples were dedicated to Cham Kings associated with divinities, especially Shiva, who was regarded as the founder and protector of Champa’s dynasties.

As some of the ornamentation work at Myson was never finished, archaeologists knew that the Chams first built their structures and then carved decorations into the brickwork. Researchers have yet to figure out for certain how the Chams managed to get the baked bricks together. According to one theory,they used a paste prepared with botanical oil indigenous to Central Vietnam. It was even said that during one period in their history, the summits of some of the towers were covered with a layer of gold.

In the Vietnam War, the vicinity of Myson was devastated and depopulated by the bitter fighting between the Americans and Viet Cong. Finding it a convenient staging ground, Viet Cong guerrillas used Myson as a base. In response the Americans bombed the monuments and there are still several enormous bomb craters dotting the landscape. In fact, Phillippe Stern, an expert on Cham art, wrote to President Nixon informing him of the destruction of the temples of Myson and in response, Nixon ordered that the bombing of the area would continue but that the site of Myson would no longer be a target.

In 2000, Myson was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site which provides funding for protection and restoration and ensures its future for generations to come.
