WHY I STOPPED GUIDING 50-PERSON BUS TOURS TO START HELLEN TRAVEL
A waving flag in the crowded streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter. A megaphone cutting through the quiet beauty of Ninh Binh. The constant, stressful ticking of the clock before a massive cruise ship sounded its departure horn in Ha Long Bay.
"Alright everyone, we have exactly 15 minutes to take pictures here before we get back on the bus!"
For years, that was my daily reality. Whether I was guiding shore excursions for thousands of cruise passengers docking for the day, or leading massive 50-person bus tours through Sapa, Ha Long, and Hanoi, the rhythm was always the same. It was a race against time.
When you are managing a group that large, travel becomes an assembly line. We had strict schedules and one primary goal: checking off as many famous Northern landmarks as humanly possible.
But looking at the faces of my guests, I always felt a lingering sense of missed opportunity.
These travelers had flown across oceans to see my country, yet all they were getting was a rushed, surface-level checklist. They didn't have the time to sit on a plastic stool and slowly sip an authentic cà phê phin. They couldn't wander through hidden alleyways, connect with local artisans, or truly feel the diverse rhythms of the country. They were experiencing Vietnam through the tinted windows of a crowded bus.
I asked myself: "Is this really what travel is supposed to be?"
That was the exact moment Hellen Travel was born.
I decided to leave the safety of high-volume, generic group tours to build something entirely different. I shifted my focus exclusively to independent, flight-based travelers—people who actually have the time to dive into the true essence of Vietnam, from North to South.
At Hellen Travel, we chose a different path:
Beyond the Checklists: We don't just focus on the North. Whether it’s the majestic peaks of Ha Giang, the heritage lanterns of Hoi An, the vibrant energy of Saigon, or hidden gems across the entire country, we craft journeys that span all of Vietnam.
Accessible, Authentic Culture: We believe cultural experiences shouldn't feel like a heavy history lecture. We focus on light, intuitive, and special moments—like a shared meal, a quiet boat ride, or a genuine conversation—that resonate naturally with all types of travelers.
Paced for You: No rushing. No megaphones. Your journey is tailored to your personal travel style, making sure you feel less like a tourist and more like you're exploring the country with a local friend.
Walking away from the big tour groups was a leap of faith. But every time a client leaves Vietnam with a full heart and a deep, personal understanding of our culture, I know it was the right choice.
Hellen Travel doesn’t sell "sightseeing." We craft journeys that let you truly live, feel, and fall in love with the real Vietnam.
✈️ If you are planning a trip to Vietnam and want an experience that is deeply personal, unhurried, and meticulously crafted just for you—send us a message. We are here to listen to your travel dreams and make them a reality!
