Have You Ever Wondered What This Mysterious Stone Tower Is? 👀

You may have walked past it while exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

A strange, round stone building standing in the middle of a busy intersection — small windows, thick walls, and a shape that looks almost like a miniature fortress.

This is Hang Dau Water Tower, one of Hanoi’s most unusual pieces of history.

Built in 1894 during the French colonial period, the tower was part of Hanoi’s early modern water-supply system. Water was pumped from the Yen Phu water plant up into the huge tank inside the tower, which could hold around 1,250 cubic metres of water, before being distributed through the city.

And here’s the interesting part…

For decades, the tower stood quietly among the traffic, while thousands of people passed it every day without ever knowing what was inside. Its unusual fortress-like design, with thick stone walls and narrow windows, makes it look more like a hidden European fort than a former water tower.

In 2023, it briefly opened to the public for an art installation, attracting huge crowds who were curious to finally see the interior of a building that had been closed for so long.

Today, even just standing outside it is a great little Hanoi moment — especially when the old tower, surrounding trees, local street life and endless motorbikes all come together in one view.
