UNESCO/MAB Task Force Recommendations on National Biosphere Reserve Origin Labelling Schemes: REALISED

"In order to promote the development of quality economies in Biosphere Reserves, the MAB Task Force on the Development of Quality Economies in Biosphere Reserves (the “Task Force”) recommends interested Member States to consider establishing National Biosphere Reserve Origin Labelling Schemes (the “schemes”). The Task Force further recommends that such schemes be based on the principles contained in this document. For the objective of such schemes, quality economies can be defined as economies and economic activities in biosphere reserves that are compatible with and supportive of the Seville Strategy and the Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Typically, such economies and activities are expected to be based on the sustainable use of regional natural and human resources, promote a long-term perspective, and strive for economic stability based on efficiency, diversity and equity. They are ‘soft’ to nature and people and respect traditional knowledge and cultures and add value to local people and their communities. The schemes would be based on adopting a
common Biosphere Reserve Origin Label."
Since 2007: This call for World Biosphere Origin and Eco-Labeling Scheme has been successfully implemented in Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, first in Vietnam/Southeast Asia.
